Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1979

This is a very bold prediction, but I have a feeling London Calling win win this year's album poll.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1979

You should know I'm a Zappa freak, and this year is incredible for him.

but what version of Strictly Genteel was released in 1979?

I am aware of

1) the version from 200 Motels (1971)
2) the orchestral version (from the 1980s)
3) the version from Make a Jazz Noise Here
etc.) and at least one version from a live recording from the You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore 6-record release, which started to be released in 1988

Which Strictly Genteel is ranked on the list high enough to have points?

The 80s version is the best, by a small margin. But the 79 (also orchestral) version is so different from the 200 Motels version so I had to include it. Also didn't vote for the 80s version when I should have.

1971 200 Motels
1979 Orchestral Favorites
1983 London Symphony Orchestra Vol. 1 (same style as 79)

He also made a killer version in more of a rock style on "Make A Jazz Noise Here" released in 1991 but recorded in 1988 (his last tour.

Should be real interresting to see your choices, Jonah!

Very nice as always, mindrocker.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1979

This is probably my most listened to year than any past music year. During my teenage years onward I began listening to music non-stop as it was released, but something about 1979 made it a lot easier list to make than any other 70s list. My favourite Spanish song of 1979: Camarón's "Volando voy"

Camarón de la Isla can be considered the most important Spanish artist ever (well, along with Joan Manuel Serrat) and also the most important flamenco artist, along again (naturally) with long time collaborator Paco de Lucía. Camarón achieved a mythical stature within the Spanish gypsy population but he was also able to transcend his own scene, to appeal both the most strict flamenco aficionados and some rock fans who never thought that could like roots music. Quoting Luis Troquel, Camarón was simultaneously the last of the classic cantaores (singers) and the first figure of flamenco renewal.
His most renowned album, “La leyenda del tiempo” (“The Legend of Time”, 1979), was also his most innovative and a landmark for Spanish music. This album not only divided his career in two halves, more pure (following an ancient tradition) prior to 1979 and more free (and more oriented to song) after, but it even divided the flamenco genre in general. Oddly a non-initiated listener would find that album a quite straight flamenco album. In fact although every song in the album is inventive in its own way, the main innovations rely on the four songs that opened and closed the two sides of the original vinyl. “La leyenda del tiempo” (the song) opened the album adapting a poem by Federico García Lorca, introducing for the first time the fabulous guitar playing of new partner Tomatito and the backing of jazz-rock musicians (maybe some sounds like the synth solo hasn’t aged very well but they were groundbreaking at the time). “La Tarara”, probably the most popular Spanish traditional song, closed side A coming to a new life thanks to a music arrangement that includes piano, synthesizer or electric guitar. And most notably the terrific album closer, “Nana del caballo grande” (“Lullaby of the Big Horse”), backed only by keyboards and a sitar superbly played by Gualberto, closing the circle of nomad gypsy people that originally came from India.
But the song I’ve chose is the opener of side B, “Volando voy” (“I’m Flying Up”), not as innovative and solemn as the other three songs I just commented. In fact it’s an humorous and uptempo number that uses as basis the rumba, the most impure and bastard flamenco style (it derives from South-American rhythms that were influenced earlier by flamenco, it’s what they call ritmos de ida y vuelta, round-trip rhythms). One of the wiser moves of Camarón was to choose well his collaborators, especially producer Ricardo Pachón (you can find him too in the 1976, 1977 and 1988 chapters) and musicians coming from groundbreaking bands that fused jazz, rock and flamenco like Alameda, Dolores, Smash or more significantly Veneno. You can listen in “Volando voy” wonderful instrumental parts of bongos (Rubem Dantas from Dolores), flute (Jorge Pardo from Dolores) and bass (Raimundo Amador from Veneno). And we can’t forget the composer of the song, Kiko Veneno (leader of Veneno), that wrote a hymn for the easy living that fitted perfectly with the Spanish idiosyncrasy. Diego Manrique (one the most important Spanish critics) suggested that “Volando Voy” could be a more appropriate Spanish official anthem than the actual one. And I agree. It would be nice to see Spanish soccer players celebrating the victory on next World Cup in South Africa (lol) singing and dancing to this hymn of joy.

VOLANDO VOY
Composer: Kiko Veneno
Performer: CAMARÓN
First release: 1979 ("La leyenda del tiempo" album)
Length: 3’24”

Volando voy,
volando vengo.
Volando voy,
volando vengo,
por el camino
yo me entretengo.
Por el camino
yo me entretengo.

Enamorao de la vida
aunque a veces duela.
Enamorao de la vida
aunque a veces duela.
Si tengo frío
busco candela.
Si tengo frío
busco candela.

Y volá volando,
volá volando voy,
volando vengo, vengo,
volá volando voy,
volando vengo, vengo.
Por el camino
yo me entretengo.
Por el camino
yo me entretengo.

Señoras y señores,
sepan ustedes.
Señoras y señores,
sepan ustedes
que la flor de la noche
es pa quien la merece.
Que la flor de la noche
es pa quien la merece.

Y volá volando,
volá volando voy,
volando vengo, vengo,
volá volando voy,
volando vengo, vengo.
Por el camino
yo me entretengo.
Por el camino
yo me entretengo.

Enamorao de la vida
aunque a veces duela.
Enamorao de la vida
aunque a veces duela.
Yo no sé quién soy,
ni lo pretendiera.
Yo no sé quién soy,
ni lo pretendiera.

Y volá volando,
volá volando voy,
volando vengo, vengo,
volá volando voy,
volando vengo, vengo.
Por el camino
yo me entretengo.
Por el camino
yo me entretengo.

Porque a mí me va
mucho la marcha tropical.
Porque a mí me va
mucho la marcha tropical
y los cariños
de la frontera me van.
Y los cariños
de la frontera me van.

Volando voy,
volando vengo,
Volando voy,
volando vengo.

I’M FLYING UP

I'm flying up,
I'm flying back.
I'm flying up,
I'm flying back,
and in my way
I take my time.
And in my way
I take my time.

I'm in love with life
though sometimes hurts.
I'm in love with life
though sometimes hurts.
If I feel cold
I light a fire.
If I feel cold
I light a fire.

Fly flying
Fly I'm flying up
I'm flying back, back.
Fly I'm flying up
I'm flying back, back,
and in my way
I take my time.
And in my way
I take my time.

Ladies and gentlemen,
you ought to know.
Ladies and gentlemen,
you ought to know
that the flower of night
belongs to who deserves it.
The flower of night
belongs to who deserves it.

Fly flying
Fly I'm flying up
I'm flying back, back.
Fly I'm flying up
I'm flying back, back,
and in my way
I take my time.
And in my way
I take my time.

I'm in love with life
though sometimes hurts.
I'm in love with life
though sometimes hurts.
I don't know who I am
I don't even try.
I don't know who I am
I don' even try.

Fly flying
Fly I'm flying up
I'm flying back, back.
Fly I'm flying up
I'm flying back, back,
and in my way
I take my time.
And in my way
I take my time.

Cause I like so much
the tropical groove.
Cause I like so much
the tropical groove,
and I like the loves
of the borders.
And I like the loves
of the borders.

I'm flying up,
I'm flying back.
I'm flying up,
I'm flying back.

Sorry for that

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1979

I need to listen to more music from this period. I had a lot of new discoveries for this list, the best being "Are Friends Electric?" The Clash could have dominated my list even more than they did.

02. The Cure | Boys Don't Cry

04. The Clash | Spanish Bombs

Ouch, I forgot to vote Boys Don't Cry. I hope 10 points is enough to get the song to the final. So my #11 is The Cure - Boys Don't Cry.

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1979

As usual from me, a lament: In the US, Labour of Lust is unavailable on iTunes and is out of print. Used copies sell for $40-some-odd and higher (in fact I found someone asking well in excess of $100). What I know from the album I like a lot, but I don't know enough of it to include it in my list. Another lament: Either too few people know the Shoes, or too few people who know them appreciate them. Sigh. Now, the list:

1) The Clash - London Calling
2) Graham Parker & the Rumour - Squeezing Out Sparks
3) Van Morrison - Into the Music
4) Elvis Costello - Armed Forces
5) Shoes - Present Tense
6) The B-52's - The B-52's
7) Michael Jackson - Off the Wall
8) Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Rust Never Sleeps
9) Gang of Four - Entertainment!
10) Donna Summer - Bad Girls
11) Marianne Faithful - Broken English
12) Wire - 154
13) The Specials - The Specials
14) Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers - Damn the Torpedoes
15) Talking Heads - Fear of Music
16) The Roches - The Roches
17) Public Image Ltd. - Metal Box/Second Edition
18) XTC - Drums and Wires
19) Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
20) Fleetwood Mac - Tusk

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1979

And the last albums to reach our final list are :

1) Clash, The - London Calling (1032 pts)
2) Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures (547)
3) Michael Jackson - Off the Wall (521)
4) Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Rust Never Sleeps (421)
5) Gang of Four - Entertainment! (340)
6) Elvis Costello and The Attractions - Armed Forces (331)
7) Pink Floyd – The Wall (314)
8) Specials, The - The Specials (289)
9) Talking Heads - Fear of Music (271)
10) B-52's, The - The B-52's (241)

The Clash wins with the largest margin of any previous poll, appearing in 27 ballots out of 29.
Not much suspens for the other 9, they all took an early lead from the rest of the pack. The #11, Tom Petty with 178 pts lacks more than a first place vote to enter the top 10, which I think never happened on the previous years.

I'll try to get the songs results as soon as I can !

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1979

Songs results :

1) Clash, The - London Calling (618 points)
2) Michael Jackson - Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough (309)
3) Cure, The - Boys Don't Cry (219)
4) Chic - Good Times (209)
5) Clash, The - Train In Vain (Stand By Me) (201)
6) Neil Young with Crazy Horse - Powderfinger (194)
7) Clash, The - The Guns Of Brixton (193)
8) Joy Division - Disorder (191)
8(tie) Police, The - Message in a Bottle (191)
10) Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb (187)

Had I voted, Disorder would be out and Atomic in !

Re: Forum Poll: The Best Albums and Songs of 1979

Nassim, I don't get why you didn't vote!? Anyway, thanks for the great job again. And now I really look forward to the final '70s poll.
