Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

as you all know by now, Pitchfork is posting their picks for their top 200 albums of the decade starting tomorrow. They'll be posting their picks for 200-151 tomorrow morning.

1. Radiohead - Kid A

Me and my high school's hipster faction have all made our T20 predictions. I'd bet my left arm that 17 of these are right.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

SR, did you mean for 12. The Blueprint instead of The Blueprint 3? I'm assuming you did, but I'm just curious.

Sadly, none of my friends read pitchfork, so I guess you guys are the only ones that I have to discuss this with.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Oh yeah I absolutely did, must have been a freudian slip or something. Aside from my predicted T20 albums, I think these have a shot at cracking it and thus proving me wrong:

Portishead- Third
The White Stripes - White Blood Cells
M.I.A - Kala
Radiohead - In Rainbows
Madvillain - Madvillainy
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
Joanna Newsom - Ys

I expect these albums to be more in the 20-40 range though.

200-151 is out!

186. The Thermals- The Body, The Blood, The Machine
184. Vitalic- OK Cowboy
183. Arctic Monkeys- Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
162. Wu-Tang Clan- The W
156. Bloc Party- Silent Alarm

Glad to see those ones, Bloc Party and Arctic Monkeys usually seems disliked by Pitchfork while their first albums are pretty good.
The W often suffers the comparison with Enter The Wu-Tang but showed new ideas and a more variate sound, even if it is not as coherent and dense as Enter the... I Can't Go To Sleep is probably one of the top 10 hip-hop songs of the decade by the way.
And Vitalic and the Thermals are personal favourites.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Pretty solid start, especially:

199. Deerhoof- Apple O'
198. Boris- Akuma No Uta
194. Pulp- We Love Life
180. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds- Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus

165. Ricardo Villalobos- Alcachofa
159. Girl Talk- Night Ripper
157. Lightning Bolt- Wonderful Rainbow
154. Ghostface Killah- The Pretty Toney Album
152. Cannibal Ox- The Cold Vein

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

I am pleasantly surprised to see Bright Eyes "Fevers and Mirrors" on there, it's my favorite album of his. Bright Eyes in general doesn't usually get much love on Pitchfork lists.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

ach I shouldn't be on this forum, I really should be working, but I find this new '3 albums per artist' rule intriguing. Seems Animal Colelctive are gonna be the biggest losers from this - wonder which one of Feels and Strawberry Jam won't make the list?? And who else has made 3 or more great albums this decade?

Ah, Spoon mite lose out too - P4K love most of their album..

EDIT: Scheisse and of course RADIOHEAD! They can't pick only 3 albums from them, though presumably hail to the thief is gonna go...

Radiohead and The White Stripes both have 4 very solid albums this decade. Pitchfork isn't a Stripes fan though, so we're prob only getting De Stijl and White Blood Cells. That said, I think Feels and Strawberry Jam will edge out Sung Tongs, while HTTT is obviously the Radiohead exclusion. The only other artists I can think of that would put up three albums in the fork's T200 are Sufjan Stevens, Spoon, TV on the Radio, and Ghostface, although there are probably more I'm forgetting.

The only real surprise for me so far is the low pacement for Bows + Arrows. I thought that one would T100.

Agree with you on the Bows + Arrows front - esp after The Rat broke T20 on the singles list.
Really? I know Straw... and Feels were both rated higher, but Sung Tongs (even though I don't like it THAT much, but probably still prefer it to the other two overall) seemed (to pitchfork at least) like a revelation, which I think will make it rate v. high.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

It would be great if someone could please post #101-150. For some reason I can't access it on Pitchfork's site.

I read somewhere else that Franz Ferdinand and The National appear on today's list. It's a pity they are outside the top 100. Ho hum - they will no doubt appear higher on various other EOD lists.

I would bet on Strawberry Jam as the AC exclusion.

I wonder which 2009 albums will make the cut. Merriweather for sure, Veckatimest and Bitte Orca probably but can any else make it ? I would say that Fever Ray deserves it but I would not bet.

The second part 150-100 And still not a single album from 2009. Bad year... Maybe XX will be in top 100.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Franz comes in at 101 with their debut. For as much as many railed against it being overrated, it seems to be turning into a rather underrated album!

I know it's off topic, but what was Fever Ray like live? She's playing in London soon, and being a poor student, I'm not sure whether its worth the 23quid or so to see her...

You really should go to see the show.
Here's link to topic I started in March.

I saw Fever Ray again last month. There were something wrong with the bass and the setlist (list of songs) was same but it was still a very good gig. The visual things are so amazing that I would recommend it also to deaf.

By the way at least in US tour the supporting act is Vuk. Don't miss it either. (I'm not sure is the US tour already over.)

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

I don't remember a lot of these doing well when Pitchfork first reviewed them. A lot of stuff on here that I personally like but again, I don't remember them liking those albums. I kind stopped reading Pitchfork during those years because they seemed to like the opposite of what I did, but now it seems like it's the opposite of that! I have no problem with that, different writers and 5-6 years will definitely change things.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

A lot of great ones in the 101-150 block. Half the albums I loved 2007-2008.

It's not surprising that a different group does well in lists than in initial reviews. Besides the fact they're writing the reviews only having heard them a week, the reviews are based on one writer and the lists are based on all of them.

Pitchfork seems to expectedly be going out of their way to include pre-discovery albums.

it's well worth it. the costumes are spectacular and they have a cool lazer/light set up. (antique lamps flashing with the beat). it was very enjoyable. Vuk also has a very beautiful voice (if she also opens for them in england)

I love the Robyn album. It's one of the best pop albums of the decade and it never ranks that high because of the way it was released at different times in every country. It deserves the worldwide acclaim it's been getting.

Jonathon, in your top 50 predictions I think you meant THEY THREW US ALL IN A TRENCH AND PUT A MONUMENT ON TOP.

Also, I'd make room for Neko Case's FOX CONFESSOR BRINGS THE FLOOD and OutKast's SPEAKERBOXXX/THE LOVE BELOW.

Pitchfork does not like Speakerboxxx that much, I doubt they would put it on their top 50.
I would not have expected Neon Bible on the top 50 but I would be surprised if it wasn't on the top 200.
I doubt Girls will put their album in the top, they probably have made the votes long before its release.

The Glow pt2, Ys and Boy in Da Corner already out is quite a surprise for me.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

I don't think we'll see another Liars album - it's pretty much consensus that Drum's Not Dead is their peak.

I've sort of resigned myself to the likelihood that The Sophtware Slump won't make this, which is a damn shame. Sometimes when a group disappoints with their follow-ups to a strong album, that album also falls in critical regard. Not really fair, but I think it happened here.

Ghostface Fishscale was already on the list, I think in the mid-60s. Other than that, the only ones I'm not sure about on your list are Neon Bible, Sung Tongs, and Young Liars EP. DY,BB will make it over the EP, Strawberry Jam will have made it over Sung Tongs, and I'm not 100% Neon Bible will make the cut (though it certainly deserves it).

If I'm right about Neon Bible, that + Fishscale mean two variable slots. So there is a small chance Think Tank might make it, although I wouldn't hold my breath. After all, Parklife didn't break their T50 of the 90s.

It's great to see Sea Change and Elephant make the list. Both albums are classics that they dismissed on release due to hype backlash. I'm glad they've seen the error in their ways.

With 50 to go, I have 17 of my T20 right. Now I think it will be my initial mix, plus White Blood Cells, Return to Cookie Mountain, and Discovery.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

I too still have 17 out of my 20 albums left. Ys, Thirs, and The Glow pt. 2 were the ones that ahve already appeared. I think my top 20 will be the same, minus these three albums, and plus White Blood Cells, Original Pirate Material, and Is This It.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Don't know the order, but this is very likely the top 20:

Animal Collective- Merriweather Post Pavillion
The Arcade Fire- Funeral
The Avalanches- Since I Left You
Interpol- Turn on The Bright Lights
Jay-Z- The Blueprint
The Knife- Silent Shout
LCD Soundsystem- Sound of Silver
Modest Mouse- The Moon & Antarctica
OutKast- Stankonia
Panda Bear- Person Pitch
Radiohead- Kid A
Sigur Ros- Agaetis Byrjun
Spoon- Kill The Moonlight
The Streets- Original Pirate Material
The Strokes- Is This It
Sufjan Stevens- Illinoise
Kanye West- Late Registration
The White Stripes- White Blood Cells
Wilco- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
Brian Wilson- SmiLE

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

The Streets album is already on the list.
And I doubt there will be Late Registration, not as fresh as College Dropout nore as reinventive as Graduation.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

They gave Late Registration a 9.5. That seems to be their prefered Kanye album.

The Streets had a different album; not original pirate material.

Original Pirate Material is #36 on their list.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

what about Neon Bible??

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Nick
what about Neon Bible??

It was ranked 27 in their 2007 list, there is no chance it reaches their top 20 (and to me it does not deserve to be in the top 100 anyway... should probably have been in the top 200)

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Lemon of Pink has a chance to make it imo

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

And the winner of the "obligatory top 50 album that no one's ever heard of before" award goes to ... Luomo. I might be missing something, but is anyone here familiar with this record at all?

Isn't AGAETIS BYRJUN a 1999 album?

I think Jonathon might have been trying to say that the Streets' A GRAND DON'T COME FOR FREE could make the top 20. I doubt it, though. I'm doubting NEON BIBLE, too, even though it would be great to see both AF albums in the top 20.

I'm thinking DISCOVERY will definitely be in there.

Basically there are 18 locks, with Spoon, Ghostface, and the Books competing for last two spots (I think they've decided SMiLE to be ineligible). I don't think the Books will make it personally (it was lower than Clientele and Kill the moonlight in 00-04) and thus I suggest the following.

1. Radiohead - Kid A
2. Arcade Fire - Funeral
3. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion
4. LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
5. OutKast - Stankonia
6. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
7. Panda Bear - Person Pitch
8. The Knife - Silent Shout
9. The Strokes - Is This It
10. Kanye West - Late Registration
11. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
12. Jay Z - The Blueprint
13. Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights
14. The Avalanches - Since I Left You
15. Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
16. Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica
17. Daft Punk - Discovery
18. The White Stripes - White Blood Cells
19. Spoon - Kill the Moonlight
20. Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele

Is anyone else upset about Sung Tongs over Strawberry Jam? Other than a few nitpicks like that, I think this list is incredibly good; maybe the best pitchfork's ever done.

That would indeed be a great top 20, but I'm not that much satisfied by the 21-50 range.

And yeah, Strawberry Jam is my favourite AC album, and would be in their list without their stupid "3 albums rule". Still Sung Tongs is the strangest, Feels the most homogenous with a dark and wild mood through all the albums and MPP is the electronic and user-friendly one (it is supposed to anyway, I find Strawberry Jam more accessible). Strawberry Jam has all the qualities, but none pushed to the extreme liked in the others.

I particularly doubt it because the album's already on the list, at #129. So, clearly Jonathon wasn't trying to say that. And, clearly, I should've looked at the list before posting.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

I don't think we'll see another Liars album - it's pretty much consensus that Drum's Not Dead is their peak.

I would've agreed with you on that one, but the inclusion of Seperation Sunday and The MilkEyed Mender, over BAGIA and Ys respectively (consensus being the latter picks are their peaks) makes me a little unsure. Liars did T30 in the 2004 list, and some bands had v. surprisingly high placements (eg phoenix, yyys, bon iver, the national - by the way, i do like all those 4 albums, and imo Alligator completely deserved its placement, though they weren't rated that highly by PF).

T20: I personally think Lemon will make it over Clientele.

It's interesting also, the only albums from the 2nd half of the decade that are gonna T20 are: Illinois (05), Late Registration (05), Silent Shout (06), Person Pitch (07), Sound of Silver (07) and MPP (09). That's only 6 out of 20...

2007 and 2008 were rather average years, but the fact that there are only 3 2009 albums in their top 200 (and not much more on Uncut list) is for me the proof that it is quite dumb to make decade lists that soon... so far 2009 appears to be a great year to me !

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

SMiLE ineligible? why? It made their best of 200-2004, and ranked pretty highly. I'd love to see it in though, it makes my personal top 20 of the decade.

I think you've nailed what is in the list, not sure about the order. The one wildcard is whether they actually did deem Smile ineligible, and if not, will that be in place of Agaetis Byrjun, as that officially came out in 1999.

Of course, Vision Creation Newsun also officially came out in 1999. Very glad it made the list, btw!

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Harold...it was late and I missed Original Pirate Material on the list.

They ranked Sigur Ros as a 2000s album twice in the past, based on the fact that it wasn't issued in the United States until then.

I still stand by my list, replacing Original Pirate Material with the Lemon of Pink.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

I hope Wilco makes the top 10; I always felt like pitchfork tried to make an example out of Wilco for bringing too much classic songcraft along with their experiments as opposed to "Truly" experimental music.

I have a good feeling though!

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

I still stand by my list, replacing Original Pirate Material with the Lemon of Pink.

I'm pretty sure Supreme Clientele will make this ahead of Lemon of Pink. Books in the Top 20 would certainly be interesting...

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Supreme Clientele could beat Lemon of Pink. I was more refering to the presence of Agaetis Byrjun and SMiLE definitely making the list.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

i'm of the opinion Person Pitch will have it over MPP and that PP and Kid A will be the complementary halves just like Loveless and Ok Computer were for their 90's. They won't be able to resist how nicely that ties up the decade.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Is anyone of the opinion that the newer SMiLe is better than the bootlegs that fans have put together of the actual Beach Boys performing the songs? Because I think the bootlegs are 100 times better. Especially since I'd heard those years before the Brian Wilson album and it just sounded like a rerecording with session musicians. I guess I can understand if that's the first time you'd ever heard SMiLe and don't have anything to compare it to, but I just don't understand why it's considered a classic when there are better versions out there.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

i don't think it's a classic without having heard the bootlegs. haha i still like it though

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

I guess it's all right.

Funeral and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot should be switched. I have no clue what the heck that Daft Punk album is doing so high either.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

It's up!

I'm disappointed that Sound of Silver is only 17th, especially given the fact that "Someone Great" and "All My Friends" ranked so highly on the songs list. Having the same number 1 song and album as the 2000-2004 list is a stubbornly Pitchfork thing to do. The preference for stuff from the decade was to be expected, but the degree to which the separation exists in this list is quite shocking, indeed!

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

17. Sound of Silver
16. Illinois
15. Silent Shout
14. Merriweather Post Pavillion

When I went through those four my jaw nearly hit the floor. And of course... Kid A again :(. At least they put Funeral at 2.

Those shocked me too. I especially expected Sound of Silver and Illinois to make the top ten, and I know many people though MPP would be top 3 (I'm glad it wasn't). Though I really like the top four, this list does seem like it should have been made at a later time to give newer albums a chance to sink in. The years 2000-2004 provided 12 of the top 13 albums, with most of them coming from `00 and `01. It's not like these years were considered significantly better than more recent ones. I assume Pitchfork will revise this list in a few years like they did with the `90s, and some of the newer albums will move up.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

The list is about as good as you would expect a Pitchfork list to be. I'm surprised they put so much Kanye in there, as he seems more in the Rolling Stone realm of acclaim.

The ones I'm most surprised to see so low are Boxer and Ys. I was also sure Silent Shout would be top ten, but it's high enough.

It's a shame they rushed it out so early they didn't give stuff like Bitte Orca and Actor time to make the list. (Not to mention Embryonic.)

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Bite Orca is 56.

They're probably going to redo it just like they did with their 90s list to include albums like Embryonic and Cuban Linx Pt 2.

Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest was in the 40s. Besides that, there were no other `09 albums, though I suspect the list redux in a couple of years will include `09 albums by Raekwon, the Flaming Lips, Phoenix, and Girls as well.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

They say they're going to post an addendum to the list in January with the 09 albums. I'm not really sure what that will look like.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Listened to 87 out of 200 of this list. 3 out of the top 20 have not reached my ears yet (Kill the Moonlight, Supreme Clientele, and Sigur Ros).

Not too surprised by list. Just as albums released at the end of the year get the shaft, so too do ones that don't have almost 10 years to build up their legendary status. Although with decade lists it's a little confusing, because do you praise something that anticipated all the musical progress of the decade, or something released well into the decade that encompasses all the musical change that actually happened?

I do hope they revisit the list in 5 years. There were definitely some shifts in their 90s lists 4 years apart, including a shift in #1 album of the decade... with OK Computer replacing Loveless.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

I think this was an excellent list. Their 50-1 were gold.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Just realized... only one Deerhoof at #199!?! Pitchfork had really loved this band this decade, and they were one of the first bands I started to really like because of the pitchfork seal of approval. There must be some kind of backlash. Especially with The Runners Four. Even the best Deerhoof albums can be considered a little slight, but they pulled out all the stops with that one to show a full range of what their sounds could accomplish. It was in the top 10 of the year-end lists for Pitchfork too.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Detractors say that Pitchfork ratings only measure the degree of resemblance to Radiohead....

I read that in "Telerama" and I found it both funny and, one has to admit, not untrue

The only 10/10 the gave were to Kid A and OK Comp

Not a bad list though, but limited to a special musical universe (critic-friendly indie rock) with rap records acting as alibis ?

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Actually, the following albums also received a 10/10 upon initial release:

The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
Bonnie "Prince" Billy - I See A Darkness
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Our Dead - Source Tags and Codes

I think there might be a few others. So far, those six have held up quite well I would say... well, except for Source Tags and Codes which is probably just okay.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Yeah...that's 5 masterpieces and Source Tags & Codes.

Also, Walt Mink and Aphex Twin had 10.0s. Richard D. James album was reduced from a 10.0 to an 8.4 circa 2005. I forget the title of the Walt Mink album, but since no albums pre-2000 are still archived, I can't really say.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Having seen Trail of Dead last weekend (ACL scouting report coming up soon, I promise), I wonder if Source Tags & Codes was an attempted corrective to make Pitchfork seem open to the really badass.

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Schleuse

I think it's easy to forgot amidst all of the Animal Collective and LCD Soundsystem albums that most pitchfork staffers grew up on Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr, Fugazi etc. So it's natural that they'd like an album like Source Tags which has that same spirit.

And the winner of the "obligatory top 50 album that no one's ever heard of before" award goes to ... Luomo. I might be missing something, but is anyone here familiar with this record at all?

I got this album. Luomo is an alias for electronica/experimental Techno artist Vladislav Delay. He frequently used to release stuff on experimental Dance labels like Mille plateaux, with lots of clicks ´n cuts and ambient-esque soundscapes. Luomo, however, is his more melodic Club-based alter ego. Of course, it´s not the ordinary four-to-the-floor beat, but with plenty of twists and turns. It´s pretty good actually. Those who like The Field albums definitely should check this one out.

Actually the name of the man behind Luomo and Vladislav Delay is Sasu Ripatti. He is very respected in the scene he represents (deep house, techno). Pitchfork is almost the only 'main stream' music magazine that gives him credit (maybe there are few guys who have voted him to #1).

Re: Pitchforks 200 greatest albums of the decade...

Don't forget that Amon Tobin's Bricolage, one of my favorite albums, also got a 10. Whenever I start to lose faith in Pitchfork, I always tell myself "but remember Bricolage..."

And Luomo's awesome! Totally deserves to be on the list.
