Re: Wanted Short field stand, toolbox, tappet cover

Hi Mike
For your info
The stand differs not only in length - but also in the inclusion of the full round disc at the spike end, a subtle change to the form of the head & another subtle change to the knuckle
These allow the sweep of the stick to be a bit different I guess

Originally / these were clamped to the frame / during 41/42 they used a lug in the rear frame - then with the introduction of the long stick & pannier frames - reverted to the clamp on type again

Re: Wanted Short field stand, toolbox, tappet cover

Ahh Thanks John.
So my November 1940 machine would have had a clamp on short field stand, I suspected as much as there a couple of photos of bikes in the same contract as mine with what looks like a clamp......... So it looks like I am looking for a short stand AND the earlier type knuckle.
Cheers John

Re: Wanted Short field stand, toolbox, tappet cover

Hi Mike
The later knuckle can be adapted easily
I had a chance to see 2 nos beside each other some years ago.
I might have photos somewhere - I think I got from Henk or Leon too
I can’t post photos here but can forward to you so that you can modify if required -

Re: Wanted Short field stand, toolbox, tappet cover

Rob, My apologies, it was 12 years ago that I downloaded them so my memory isn't getting any better.:white_frowning_face:

I have never seen a short stand so am I correct in assuming the knuckle on the left with the smaller chamfers and the lower stand end that looks to be thinner are the short versions?

I have one of the knuckles with the larger chamfers that has had a spot of weld added to each chamfered face so I'm guessing it was in order to work as the knuckle on the left but who knows.

Left knuckle and top stand pivot are short.

Here are a couple more pictures, I regret selling the short stand, I think I bought it from Eric so it probably came from N Africa.

Re: Wanted Short field stand, toolbox, tappet cover

Thanks for all the input.
I have later knuckle so I'll look out for early one, I'll try a UK dealer who may have one.

As for the stand, anyone want to buy my original long one just email me!

Re: Wanted Short field stand, toolbox, tappet cover

Thanks for the heads up. Do you make the short field stand as well?

Re: Wanted Short field stand, toolbox, tappet cover

I spent a lot of time and effort to get all this correct.
First of all, there was a long field stand mounted to a brazed on lug.
I think there was balance issues with this.
The result was the clamp on longer field stand.
The long field stand knuckle has a greater rotation as it's parked horizontal.
The longer field stand is parked lower to avoid the panniers, so less rotation required.
So, the early knuckle fits all versions. The deployed angle is all the same.
All working parts hardened and tempered.
BTW, the chamfers on the knuckle have to be correct, or the chainstay gets eaten.

To save everyone having to look, just like me. Here are all the parts required for both.

Re: Wanted Short field stand, toolbox, tappet cover

Hi mark
Just to clarify something on this
The early prop stand has been known & commonly referred to as the short stand
It was originally attached to the frame using a clamp & according to bsa contract C7827 was used on the following serial number range - WM20 25001 ~ WM20 42000 & contracts prior to this

After 42001 it seems logical that the lug on frame replaced the clamp on arrangement - this however was relatively short lived as when the pannier frame & bags were introduced - the prop stand was extended & reverted to a side clamp once more - the frames etc also blocked the original higher mounted retaining clip on the lifting handle
The new prop stand had to be longer to reach the new clip position near the rear wheel spindle

Just now I am struggling to find the definitive introduction date of pannier frame introduction at bsa which of course then sees the long prop stand as std equipment

Re: Wanted Short field stand, toolbox, tappet cover

I know what you saying John.
But if the stand was long to start with, the next version would be longer?
A short stand would be more like Ron's Jiffy.

Re: Wanted Short field stand, toolbox, tappet cover

Mark I was also confused to start with when you referred to the stands as long, before I noticed that you referred to one as longer. As John said, the early "field" stand has always been known as the Short "field" stand. Any of the civilian type would be known as a prop stand ....Or Jiffy stand for the Meracans. Ron
