contract number brass plate

Howdy gents,
Is someone making the contract brass plates that are riveted to the rearguard, and exactly were are they fitted ?
Does someone have photos of these positions ?

Thanks

David, the positioning of these plates varies according to the make of motorcycle......

Note also that the brass plates were generally only used up to 1942.....by 1943 most plates were stamped out of thin steel and as far as I know no-one reproduces the latter. Although not definitive by any means, most of the early contracts prefixed by a "C" used brass plates and later contracts prefixed by an "S" used the steel type......

In addition, not all WD motorcycles featured these plates....

Re: contract number brass plate

Almost every contract had a different style of etching, but I should think that most of the larger contracts at least could be pinned down...Which contract is it ?

Re: contract number brass plate

Dave, it was close to the end of C7287..Catalogue Reference 24.

Looking at these plates, and how they change it seems that the whole batch were made and delivered for fitment at the commencement of the contract. I've never been able to detect changes of style within a given contract and they were etched rather than stamped, although I have seen the odd stamped replacement....Always difficult to know when that was done though.

This is the best example that I can find in my files.

C7287-Contract-Plate

We can say for certain that this contract had plates, and they were mounted on the upper surface of the number plate bracket (which was the MT110 type). They weren't always straight, from the look of things..No pre-drilled holes ? Presumably they were re-mounted directly onto the mudguard when the number plate holder was deleted in favour of the WD tail light.
