Dispatch Riders Socks Colour

Hi Guys,

Might be an odd question but what was the colour of socks issued to dispatch riders?
Khaki or white or?????
Where might I get some.

Many thanks,
Paul

Re: Dispatch Riders Socks Colour

This question should be on the forum!!....I've seen both drab and white hose in photos though I think the drab ones would be correct for wartime issue...Would you really want highly visible white hose...?...They are in fact knitted tubes without feet, so hose not socks...I bought two pairs of army socks, cut the feet off, then cut the resulting tubes lengthways down one side. Next I laid one of the resulting squares on top of the other and sowed together the two edges...

That gave sufficient diameter for them to be turned back over the DR boots...Repeating the procedure with the second pair of socks completed the hose 'pair'...Ian

Thank you Ron,

Will keep my eyes one to buy a pair from wherever!
A pair will turn-up at somepoint.

Best regards,

Re: Dispatch Riders Socks Colour

Most chaps wear the white sea socks, as these are long enough to fold over the top of the boot but I think it's just for the aesthetic appearance more than anything.

Re: Dispatch Riders Socks Colour

Hi Paul,

Both were used during WW2, there are enough pictures available to proof.
Since I'm wearing the new made DR Boots, which are very light and comfortable, I sometimes don't wear high socks at all, like on the forum picture.
In the end the easiest way is to use the tubes.
