Dynamo is not charging ,so I have stripped all the drive side down ,slackened off the clamp securing the dynamo itself and also the dust cover, but I cannot pull it back through the plates, I have managed to pull it about half an inch and that is all.
What am i not doing ??????
Been a while since I did this but I think you have to rotate the dynamo before you can pull it out. I could be wrong of course it was at least 10 years since I had a similar problem on my G80
Good luck!
WD G3L Dynamo removal - Ho what fun - the most difficult thing to remove.
My method of removing the dynamo is as follows: -
Remove the bottom stud of the gear box, slacken off the top stud, this enables the gearbox to be swung back on the top stud & clear the dynamo
The primary chain case outer to be removed, to enable the removal of the dynamo sprocket & chain
Outer magneto chain cover has to be removed, as is also the magneto drive chain & sprockets
Then the inner chain/timing cover removed, be careful as the cam shafts will drop out as well
Slacken off, then undo the dynamo clamping screw, then push the dynamo clamping screw back
the dynamo should now be free to rotate
Rotate the dynamo, so that the two screws that hold the locating strip line up with the cut out in the rear engine plate, these screws are a very close fit within the engine plate. I reduced the height of the screws when i got the dynamo off to enable easier
removal & refitting
The dynamo should be able to be removed to the camshaft side
Thanks guys for your replies.
Chris, I managed to do get the dynamo out in the end without touching anything on the off side of thr bike, once I had removed the dust cover from the end of thr dynamo it came away easily
Lex, yes I see the cutout in the engine plates but there was nothing on the dynamo to coincide.
Ithe bike was a basket case when I got it , the dynamo is dated 1965 so your information is not relevant ????
I have now got to get the dynamo checked and then re fitted so stand by for another batch of questions
Once again thanks guys
The plate that should be on the outside of the dynamo case is there to maintain the dynamo chain alignment, the plate should have slotted holes for adjustment and is retained by 2 slotted cheese headed screws with a 0 B.A thread
