I am in the market for an early top yoke and also early foot pegs for my 1940 WM20 and have the following that I am happy to trade with a cash adjustment either way:
1, DU42 headlight assy with supports (no switch, ammeter or switch panel), original shell with NOS black rim, frosted NOS glass and a MU42 reflector, shell painted green.
2, A Lycett front spring pillion seat with cover for restoration (a rare beast apparently), I had it in a electrolysis bath for a while which freed up the hinges and it is in solid condition but would need more soak time to clean it up. Once I discovered I had bought the wrong type for a WM20 I stopped work on it.
So what do you have lurking under that bench, don't be shy?!
Does anyone know of a supplier for the large nuts (15-5285) that fix the handlebar damper rubbers? I have a salvaged pair awaiting replating, but would like some good 'uns.
Hi Craig
I have the following here
1 x set of retaining nuts - chrome plated
1 x set of locking tab washers - un plated
1 x set of modern shock absorber rubbers
It’s the last of what I had made in U.K.
if interested drop me a line
Well since Scott seams to have missed out on the parts that John has, maybe Craig could send you his original nuts to copy to go with your washers?
When I built my 39 Speedtwin, I bought the handlebar rubbers off Jeff Hunter (the rubber man) But the rubber or Neoprene that he uses was far too soft and just squidged out the sides as I tightened the nuts. So I visited a firm in Southampton who specialise is various forms of rubber components. They pressed me out some doughnuts the correct size from some sheet material. It must have been 1/2" or 5/8"? thick and clamped up perfectly. Ron
Thanks for all the inputs chaps, after getting a lead I have secured a top yoke. It’s showing it’s age but I can sort that out.
Can anyone tell me what the thread size the big nuts are??
This puzzle is fun and games.
15-5281 is the inner washer so that the outer tab is not obvious.
15-5284 is the outer washer.
So, the arms must be on the correct sides.
15-5285 is the nut.
I have now seen a locking washer for the nut.
Is this a BSA part? I can't find it in any parts book.
I don't know the part number, but have a pair of repro lock washers from John O'Brien. I'll post a photo later. They're dished to allow the edge to be flattened against the nuts. I suspect thread lock may do the job just as well.
BTW I'm in the process of whittling and tapping a pair of post-war footrests for my 1940 WM21. Not de luxe, but will have the big washers that secure the rubbers.
I think I've finally got there Ron.
Too many people with the best intensions giving me duff info.
I see now there isn't an inner washer, the rubber butts up to the casting.
That's the mistake I made Ron.
It was pointed out to me that the grooves in the yoke don't go all the way to the shoulder.
So I'm guessing the reference to "inner" means inside of the nut.
With the locking washer between.
The example of the locking washer I have, has been chrome plated.
I think the nickel and chrome will need to be very thin.
You're correct Mark. The rubber doughnut sits against the handlebar support bracket. The chrome washer goes next, then the thin lock washer, then the nut.
