I have a couples of questions about my gearbox which I am looking over as part of bike overhaul. The gear changing was always a bit clunky and poor when it was last running so thought I'd have a look inside whilst it's out. I note the 2 shifting pawls don't line up well at all with that toothed plate. Should they be inline in the same plane?
Also I've read about the false neutrals between 3 and 4 which I have. Before I start fiddling is there a recommended process to follow in setting the box up for better gear changes? I have a modified bike pedal as recommended in Han's service sheet. However, I find a cordless drill on the shafts mainshaft nut great for turing box over whilst looking through inspection hole.
Hi Neil,
When the outer cover is fitted it will push the ratchet back into alignment with the pawls, when operating the gear lever with the cover off you'll need to push the ratchet home. I notice that you have at least one broken tooth on the ratchet, this may not be causing an issue but is worth checking the mechanism for more damage and ware.
Here's an old thread on gear change issues and adjustment to the control rod.
Some great information here I'll try some of this out.I see there's a few of those 'gear change ratchet levers ' on eBay, part number 15-4206. So I might as well get one to rule it out.
