A friend of mine has just obtained 2 Matchless frames that he has been told are middle to late 1930s. Their frame numbers are 3041 and 1743. Can anybody tell us how to date them please ? They both have double front down bars. Regards to everybody, Dave.
I am no 1930's Matchless expert as my oldest Matchless is a 1951 but, as far as I know the only models they made with a double down tube frame in the 1930's besides the V twin model X was 1935 to 1938 G80, G90 and G3. In 1939 they went to a single down tube frame to try and make the G3L as light as possible.
Thanks for that Bruce. On the AJS-Matchless owners club forum there is an answer to a similar question as mine. It appears that during the 1930s each MODEL Matchless had its own list of frame numbers so it looks like its an absolute minefield.Regards, Dave.
Hi David, you can contact me in the above email address and I will do my best to help you. Unfortunately the prewar factory records are lost but I do have a database of over 1,000 pre-war Matchless’s which I use to help date them. I am the dating officer for the AJS & Matchless Owners Club. Cheers John
