June saw me in Normandy with friends on our bikes, Thanks to the Normandy old bikers who invited us into their group at Ouistreham.
My bike, freshly restored with about 50 miles on the clock went well for the first few days but then compression dropped off and staring became difficult.
At home investigation found that the exhaust valve was virtually stuck . Once that was remedied I was back on the road, however since then I have been reading a period instruction book which refers to valve stem oiling via a hole in the guide. I,m pretty confident that there was no oil feed , so without any lubrication to the valve can I expect a reccurence of this problem ?.
I had a similar problem with my WD G3L. It turned out to be blocked exhaust valve oil ways. The iron cylinder head runs quite hot especially when used hard. With the cylinder head off & the exhaust valve removed try squirting something like WD 40 with the straw attachment down the little hole in the to gasket face of the cylinder head, if the oil passage way is clear it should be able to be seen in the bore of the valve guide also in the exhaust push rod hole in the cylinder head is another oil hole, try squirting WD 40 down that using the straw attachment. If the spay appears in the bore of the valve guide
the oil way is clear. If it does not appear it probably means that the oil way is blocked. I drilled out the two oil way blanking plugs & used a piece of welding wire with the end flattened down to clear out the carburised oil from the oil passages. I then tapped the drilled hole & sealed it with a small grub screw
