TRIUMPH 3HW ,Clip,cable A/R.

Quite an obscure part,Triumph 3HW Clip, cable A/R (advance retard cable),presume this clip stops the advance retard cable from being trapped.

below, these two clips are from machines not fitted with a steering damper (late 1944/45),machines with a steering damper did not have the spacer, the clip fitted onto the end of the steering damper anchor plate.

below, clip shown in position, although this example is a bit bent and in probably the wrong position.

Not so sure Steve? this is from the January 1944 Chilwell LV6-MT4 master catalogue, mine is a Rob van Meel reprint

Re: TRIUMPH 3HW ,Clip,cable A/R.

Hi Rob, it's a strange one this, Triumph did use those aluminium cable ties, you can see them on original photos, the clip fitted to the steering damper anchor plate might not be in the 3HW parts books, the two in the photos are from original triumph frames, the photo of the one in situ is where the other two were, only the advance retard cable or the clutch cable would be anywhere near that clip, will have a look at some pre and post war parts books see if I can find anymore info, or were they just fitted to the army bikes?

Re: TRIUMPH 3HW ,Clip,cable A/R.

I'll be interested in your research Steve, my 3HW is one of those later ones with 7/8 bars and no steering damper. Cheers Ron

Re: TRIUMPH 3HW ,Clip,cable A/R.

My 1942 3HW was found with both the clip and aluminium cable ties…

Re: TRIUMPH 3HW ,Clip,cable A/R.

Where does clip 18880 fit? Can you send me a pic Kostas? Ron

Re: TRIUMPH 3HW ,Clip,cable A/R.

The other clip MT4-18880 in the VAOS catalogue is just sharing that page, it's used on some military vehicles, but not necessarily motorcycles.

Ron,

My clip is identical with those in Steve’s pictures (not he spare parts list). I do have a picture of it, will dig it out and send it to you!

Cheers,

Re: TRIUMPH 3HW ,Clip,cable A/R.

I now think that the steel clip is for the exhaust valve lifter cable, and that it was only fitted to the wartime mlitary models
3SW,5SW & 3HW, why only the military models is unclear to me looked at several parts books pre war, wartime & early post war, it first shows up in the 1939 Triumph spares book, as fitted to 3SW machines only.

Re: TRIUMPH 3HW ,Clip,cable A/R.

Steve what is the part number of that clip? I think F1771 is the 8" ally strip which I can see in pictures of all 3 models. Cheers Ron

Re: TRIUMPH 3HW ,Clip,cable A/R.

Ron, I agree with you on that. A/R in the quantity column indicates "As Required" .

It's odd that they didn't have a fixed quantity for each machine, but maybe it changed over time ?

Re: TRIUMPH 3HW ,Clip,cable A/R.

Have had a look through several Triumph parts books, pre war, wartime and post war, the aluminium cable ties in all of them are listed under part no XA69, even the later parts books into the 1960s are still listed as part no XA69 with illustrations of the cable ties in some of them, the illustrated parts list on dragonflys website also has them listed as XA69, part no F1771 cable clip must be the steel clip that is used for the exhaust valve lifter cable, the 3HW parts book is most likely not accurate in how this part is listed within it.

Re: TRIUMPH 3HW ,Clip,cable A/R.

These two photos from a 1941 Motorcycling magazine are not that great quality,I think they date from the temporary factory in Warwick which had a canal at the rear,so probably taken near by,the close up one shows the position of some of the aluminium cable ties, also there is a clip on the steering damper anchor plate which is on the off side, presume this is also on later 3HWs in addition to the near side exhaust valve lifter cable clip, also I presume the 3SW/5SW models also had this off side cable clip also.

Re: TRIUMPH 3HW ,Clip,cable A/R.

Thanks Steve. Good how these little things come to light over the years. When will you go into production, making copies of your original? Ron
