My biggest wish is to be at the Pegasus Bridge with these two motorcycles;
Frame number XG46003 and engine number BH43799 are "married up", which means that they both started life in the same motorcycle. (Not the same as "matching numbers", where both numbers are identical. Ariel never had "matching numbers".)
According to the factory ledgers it was despatched from the factory on January 5th 1945. Originally it was fitted with Dunlop tyres. It was made under military contract S/5514, which was a contract for 3.000 bikes (frame numbers XG44251 - 47250; census numbers C5363021 - 5366020). This allows us to calculate this bike's census number, which was C5364773. I made up the correct font for the Ariel census numbers, low tack stencils are available from Axholme.
Two bikes from the same contract:
And two bikes from the same contract with close numbers:
Quite a few Ariels from this contract were transferred to the post war Belgian Army, two examples:
Just to add some specification details to Jan's information. These last few contracts were fitted with the standard "WM20" 7/8" handlebar with the standardised Amal controls, and the steering damper was deleted. (filler shells were fitted to make up the difference to the 1"handlebar clamps.) The ally primer case and timing cover were replaced with Tin items and most were fitted with Vokes filters. The pillion saddle is a specially raised up version of the "long" Acumen saddle. Ron
