This brass tag just came my way....The part number 66-63 denotes a complete WDM20 engine with magdyno and carb...So, this would have been attached somewhere on a 'new spares' or 'overhauled' engine....Ian
That's very interesting. I have a brass plug that goes into the spark plug hole. It came with my REME overhauled engine that had never been put back in service. I assume it was for transportation, and to avoid smashing the plugs which would have protruded.
I wonder where your lovely brass tag would have been attached?

Usually on the N/S rear cylinder base nut, and then possibly bent over to lie flat against the engine. At least that's where I've seen rebore tags fitted!
The hole in the tag is too small to fit on a cylinder base stud, being 1/4" diameter..(Perhaps a tappet cover screw?)..The tag itself is 1 5/8" long by 7/8" wide and is approx. .040" thick....On the same subject, another forum member from the Netherlands sent me a picture of his engine which has this part number (66-63) stamped directly into the aluminium of the crank case...They must have run out of tags!!...I'll post that picture here later....Ian
Here's the photo of the stamped engine...Presumably this number was stamped on if it was an engine supplied as spares or after an overhaul when it was put in storage....As with the brass tag I'd assume it's indicative of an engine that has been seperated from a bike for some time....Ian
Great pictures Jan...These tags are something I hadn't come across before....Saying that, of all the M20s and M20 mudguards I've had pass through my hands over the years I've never got a contract plate either!!..I guess I'm just unlucky..:face_with_rolling_eyes: ...Ian
