I assumed the major factor in an M21's often prodigious oil consumption is barrel distortion due to the asymmetric barrel.

I wouldn't say oil consumption is overly high...I've done Normandy Tours and other events riding all the way from my home in Devon without having to 'top up' at all...The barrel isn't that subject to distortion either..After the '38 redesign when an air gap was introduced behind the tappet chamber cylinder wear is fairly even I've found...Ian
