Cables

Hi all. Another question for the hive mind. I intend making my own control cables from scratch. Can anyone tell me what diameter Bowden cable I need for Mag, throttle and choke. I imagine the valve lifter is a heavier cable?
Cheers. Mike.

Re: Cables

I thought about it Mike as some of the ones we had in stock were not the best fit. I have others now that are very good. I know the purists will say they are all wrong, but it depends on what you are looking for.

Re: Cables

The secret with cables is to buy good quality cable and outers, practice your soldering techniques and buy the correct flux and solder......For the front brake and clutch use the heaviest cable you can...Bowden cable is numbered No1, 2, 3 and 4....
No1 .062" diameter (1.57mm)..Use for throttle, choke, adv/rtd and valve lifter..
No2 or No3 (preferably No3) .075" diameter and .085" diameter (1.9mm and 2.5mm)...Use for clutch cables..
No4 .104" diameter (2.64mm)...Use for front brake cables...
These are my preferences...Ian

Re: Cables

If you or somebody like correct cloth covered cables that are very nice... https://www.flechterei-stratil.de/

Re: Cables

Hello Ian,

Would you have an official Bowden specification showing these wire diameters and preferably the conduit outer diameters?
It looks like the wires do not follow SWG spec, is that a correct assumption?
I cannot find any "official" Bowden specification.
I am trying to understand the cables used on the Nortons.
I now come to 3 inner wire diameters but only 2 conduit outer diameters.
Clutch and Front Brake No. 3
Exhaust valve lifter No. 2
Air, Adv/Ret. and Throttle No.1

Inner No. 2 and No. 3 both in Bowden no. 2 outer
Inner No. 1 in Bowden no. 1 outer

I am however not certain about the Bowden denominations.

Any info/comment would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Rob

PS, Flechterei Stratil really has very good looking outer conduits, either as new or "Patina" versions

Re: Cables

Yes, outer diameters would be usefull, but have measured many NOS Norton cables, and wrote all that down.

Stratil will not send out of Europe, but I seem to be the unofficial importer to Australia and the UK, having sent and brought hundreds of meters into both countries over the last 3 years.

But best is if someone wants to buy 150 meter rolls at the time, and sell it on in the UK, contact me about it.

Cheers,

Lex
