Dating a pair of WM20's

Hi all. I have two BSA WM20's that I am gradually returning to military trim. One is a nearly complete motorcycle that does not currently have a V5. The other has a V5 but is on a 1968 registration (I presume this is when it was de-mobbed and entered civil use).

The one that has no V5 has the frame number: WM20.6880 and the engine number 8157.which has been stamped over WM20
B

The bike with a V5 but registered as 1968 has the frame number: WM20.34492 and engine number WM29740.

I have spoken to the DVLA in Swansea and apparently I can get a V5 with age related number for the machine with no V5, and get a replacement age related plate for the one with a V5. Can anyone who has done this tell me the dates of the two bikes and where I can get the dating certificates?
Many thanks.
Mike.

Following on from the earlier question. Is it possible to find out the 'C' number that would have appeared on the petrol tanks of the two bikes?

Re: Dating a pair of WM20's

The bike with frame number WM20.6880 has left the Birmingham factory on 10/10/1939, as part of military contract C/5110. This was a contract for 8.100 bikes (frame numbers WM20.5001 - WM20.13100).

The original census number would have been C3930300. Here's a line up with close numbers:

C3931142

I'm not sure about the engine number though...

The bike with frame number WM20.34492 has left the Birmingham factory on 14/03/1941, as part of military contract C/7287. This was a contract for 17.000 bikes (frame numbers WM20.25001 - WM20.42000).

The original census number would have been C4351084. Here's a sister bike:

C4350986

This number appears in the KeyCards, which means that it was used in the post war British Army. The post war registration number was 06YD14. It was indeed demobbed in 1967. A hi-res scan of this KeyCard (#129a) can be obtained from Lex. Here's a post war picture with a close number:

04-YD-45gettyimages-2659613-1024x1024

The engine with duplicated frame number WM20.29740 also comes from contract C/7287. The complete bike was despatched from the factory on 13/11/1940, and would have had census number C4346332. The frame of this bike is also in the KeyCards (#170a), but the duplicated frame numbers on the engines were never recorded in the KeyCards.

Official dating certificates can be obtained from the VMCC.

Hope this helps... 😊

Hi Jan. That's fantastic. Thank you. I will get onto the VMCC for the certificates. Kindest regards. Mike.
