Replacement brake shoes

The Feked firm offers brake shoes from either the Ferodo, Girling or Newfren brands. (https://www.feked.com/wheels/brakes/brake-shoes/)

Is there a qaulity difference or is there a braking/friction difference?
Does any of you have experience with these?

I am not sure what the right choice would be.

Feked themselfs could not tell much.

Cheers,

Rob

Re: Replacement brake shoes

Girling Classic Motorcycle is one of the names that Wassell has bought up so it's simply a marketing exercise as per their Lucas stuff and Hepolite in pre-distressed boxes.

Newfren sound Italian perhaps ?

Ferodo still seem to be of good quality, but if it's Norton shoes you're looking for then they're almost certainly intended as Dominator / Early Commando rears with a compound designed not to fade on a heavyish 100 mph + motorcycle.

These are the best people to advise you about the correct lining material for classic use. https://saftek.co.uk/

Re: Replacement brake shoes

Hi Rob
Try Gary Parkin at Moto anciennes in France
This is his specialist area & with him based in France you are EU to EU

He’s an apprentice Norton 16H man too - so you will both get along well

Re: Replacement brake shoes

Hello John,

That was the name eluding me!!

I have been in contact with him about Nortons but not on brake linings but he told me about his business.

Memory already fading, grrrr

Re: Replacement brake shoes

I picked up 2 sets of bsa m20 brake shoes with riveted on new old stock liners at shepton last week
It was late when I saw them & was surprised to see them there that late in the day & at that price
Heavy brake shoes too

Re: Replacement brake shoes

John, I know where you got them from! but interestingly, Norton also had very heavy cast brake shoes, and "normal" lighter ones, Rob, maybe you can explain?

Re: Replacement brake shoes

The 'lighter' shoes were manufactured from an aluminium alloy with a low Zinc content...Presumably as part of the drive to restrict the consumption of aluminium to more important uses the zinc content was increased, thus increasing the weight...
It's worth noting that when modern linings are bonded to the high zinc castings the temperatures used can cause the casting to 'sag', altering its radius...I think Saftek have addressed this problem with their production method but it's worth checking before having bonded linings applied to the 'heavy' brake shoes...
Rik..Newfren are an Italian company that have manufactured friction materials since the late 40's...I've used their disc pads and they work well...Ian
