BSA tank number and production date

Hi,

I´m restaurating a BSA WM20 from 1944, and I´m searching for the correct tank number and also the production date.

The frame number is WM20.97688

The engine number is BM20 199

Maybe someone of you can help me.

Best regards,

Gregor

Re: BSA tank number and production date

No idea about the engine number. But the frame number comes from contract S/2603, which was a contract for 8.000 motorcycles. Census numbers for this contract were C5207518 - C5215517. Your bike's census number would have been C5208388. Deliveries for this contract were due in December 1943, @ 2400 motorcycles per month. Your bike must have been built in December 1943 - January 1944.

These are two "close" numbers:

C5208795
C5209074

Re: BSA tank number and production date

You have a post war engine from 1953...
M20s that year started at BM20 101 (in August 1952 as the BSA model year for '53 started then and ran from August 52 to August 53) and yours is 98 engines after that....If that concerns you, to put it right you'll need a set of wartime crankcases, a timing cover and a wartime crankcase breather assembly...Also an iron head if your engine has an alloy one fitted....You can use everything else from the engine...Ian
