It's a requirement. You're taking a chance if you don't. That said, the GB sticker was required on vehicles without EU number plates and most people ignored it...there was more goodwill then though.
If you're taking a van or camper over 3.5tons, don't forget the big ugly French "Angles Mort" Blind spot stickers. Even MVs are required to have them
