They certainly are vulnerable, Ron. Even walking them slowly off a not too high kerb with the brake slowing the descent will put a scrape underneath the crankcase. It's odd, as India Contract Nortons had crankcase protectors from 1937...The War Office in the UK seem to have been obsessed with the theoretical ground clearance rather than what happened if it contacted.
