Old photos - what year is this WM20?

Hi
Can anyone ID what year this WM20 is based on the tinware and accessories please? It was my granddad's bike that he built during his national service in Egypt 1950 at REME base Tel EL Kebir. He had it painted how he liked and had a local painter do the tank emblem based on an image he saw in a magazine. I'm hoping to locate a bike of the same year and build it as his was.

Thanks

Re: Old photos - what year is this WM20?

I think there's a Facebook group of a guy in Egypt that is into these M20's.
Worth a search (I myself don't have Facebook).

I'm on the lookout for a project M20 to recreate grandad's bike (pictured) if anyone in the UK has a project for sale please let me know.
Thanks

Without a frame number it's gonna stay guesswork, even if it was originally a 1940 bike, it could have had several Army rebuilds, and all 1940 bits would have been gone.

I like the pictures of that bike. Many (most?) of these bikes had second (& 3rd & 4th...) careers after their military service & it's good to see evidence of this.

hi Nathan,
Like others have said, without a frame number there is no sure-fire way to date a WM20 from an image. These military bikes are a bit like grand-dad's vintage axe - the handle has been replaced a few times and he replaced the head at one stage as well. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that a generous amount of tinware etc onn this bike may have had an earlier life in a nearby REME supply depot.

I was thinking if I were in the same situation as yourself, I'd try to find the date range for military deliveries to egypt and surrounds, find a project in that date range, and build it with the same tinware in the images.

They made quite a few of these and there are countless variations, each staying that way until put into service where almost everything would be replaced at one time or other. However you build it, you will not find a more pleasant way to spend your time.

A guy near me (Bill/Bournemouth) has a desert painted WM20 all up and running I think he's asking around £5K? Let me know if you want his phone number. Ron
