Re: Paint....

Hi Ian,
I am currently doing a restoration of a vehicle that was originally in Khaki Green No.3 I found a cover plate and the reverse of it appeared as the day it was made. I visited RR Motor Services in Kent who supply military paint shade under the name Warpaint. They stock KG3 and it was a perfect match to my part. No messing around mixing paint shades.s

Re: Paint....

The problem I have is that I want to apply a matt lacquer as a protective top coat....To date I haven't been able to find a matt lacquer that I can spray with a spraygun over the synthetic paint I've always used (and of which I have a reasonable quantity 'in stock'):grimacing: .....

So, I need to buy a basecoat over which a 2K lacquer can be applied without reacting...Ideally, that would be a stock colour if there's a good match to KGP3 as I can get as much as I want at anytime...Alternatively, I'll have to get it mixed but the key point is there must be a lacquer available for it...Ian

Re: Paint....

Ian,

I used a petrol resistant Matt lacquer over the War Paint KG No 3and didn’t have any issues. I can find out what it was if you’d like to know.

Re: Paint....

Does anyone have an informed opinion about Paintman's KG3 satin synthetic enamel? I like it with a coating of matt varnish, but no idea how faithful it is to the original... [Cue rivet counters]

Re: Paint....

I used paint mans KG no3 enamel on my Carrier petrol tanks, but it reacted with the Upol primer I had painted on first and bubbled up over night. The colour was a little darker than the original KG No3 I’ve found. I can send you a comparison picture if you want, just send me an email and I’ll reply with some images.

Re: Paint....

Hi Ian,

Apologies for taking so long, the petrol and UV resistant lacquer I used on my petrol tank and Carrier fuel tanks was this:

https://pro-xl.co.uk/product/promatt-lacquer-aerosol-400ml/

Re the R&R Kg No3, I've recently had a good technical conversation with a local specialist paint supplier. The KG No3 that R&R sell is a decent colour match, but they manufacture it using synthetic resin. Which, I was told, is a cheap and poor quality resin which never really cures very hard. It was referred to as 'Skirting board paint'. I was told that Synthetic has very low resistance to UV and fuel etc and will fade over time and go chalky (not well suited to vehicle restoration). Had I realised this at the time I would have taken more time to get the paint colour matched in an Acrylic, which I was told would be much better suited to painting a vehicle; hardens better, better resistance to UV and fuel and weathers better.

The other issue I have with the R&R synthetic is that it is water permeable. When my carrier sat out under a tarp for a couple of months, rain sat in some of the brackets and lifted the paint!

This may all be old information to you, but in case not I thought I would share it and potentially save someone some future heart ache. For my Matchless G3 restoration, I will be getting the local paint place to match a sample in Acrylic.
