I made some samples of the gearbox and oil tank drain plugs. 28-0043 and 02-0084
Although I'm not a big fan of using stainless steel everywhere, it's handy in places.
Drain plugs are such places.
To enhance these further they have in true PES fashion been fitted with magnets.
The use of magnets in gearboxes and engines can extend their lives.
If there is enough interest I'll do a very small production run.
I would recommended you make the magnets stick out some.
I made some for my M21 and the gearbox one, the magnet sticks out maybe a half inch and the oil tank, I think it was about an inch.
I noticed on my 2008 BMW R1200 that the magnets stick out of the drain plugs, so I copied that. Even on modern bikes, you will see metal in the oil. But it does not make you feel good seeing the magnet covered in metal!
Thank you for your input Bruce, I have been making magnetic drain plugs for over 20 years now and have varied the design to achieve what I feel is optimum.
It's a bit like oil filters, they are not fit once and never change! More people think like this that you can ever imagine.
These plugs do capture small metallic particles. If all is well when you inspect it there should be a coating of brown/black mud.
This is normal ware and tear, finding any thing bigger is a cause for concern. Lumps? Best pull it apart.
This design is easy to clean and unlikely to deposit a magnetic lump where it shouldn't be.
I haven't worked for BMW, so have not been able to correct their mistakes. ;)
Thank you all for your interest and kind words. I only made a few of these as the opportunity arose at the end of another job. Strangely the taper plugs were more successful than the flat ones, so I only have a couple of those.
I will make more once I have material in stock. Anita will email you in order with purchase details.
