Rob it's just a trick if you haven't got the BSA tool which is not the best idea anyway. It squeezes the spring down so that the nut can be started on the thread, but you have to then turn the nut while it's under pressure. It's why we have made up our own versions which allow the nut to float when the spring is compressed. Ron

Yes the drawing is very vague and seems to show the nut fully home. But the rod screws into the sleeve nut and the wing nut with large washer will compress the spring. Ron

It appears to compress the spring via the locknut, would that make the locknut easier to undo?
