1941 WD G3L Tyre Question

I searched for this on the forum and found a lot for the M20, but only one small thread from 2012 on tyres for the WD G3L.
http://pub37.bravenet.com/forum/static/show.php?usernum=3155626639&frmid=16&msgid=1232675&cmd=show

However, it appears both the WM20 and G3L used the same tyre sizes.

19 x 3.25 Front and 19 x 3.50 rear.

The earlier thread I read stated that people were running 3.50 front and rear on the G3L without issue.

So two questions.

1. Should I get a 3.25 or 3.50 for the front?

2. Apart from the Ensign Universal, which I can't get in Australia, is there another brand/model that is recommended?

I have seen these:
Mitas H02 Classic

Metzeler Block

Re: 1941 WD G3L Tyre Question

Alan I can't comment on the Metzeler tyres as I've never used them. But I've used the Mitus H02 350 x19 on at least two of my regular WD bikes for years and found them to be excellent tyres with a long wear rate. Also they are a smallish 350 so not much different than an old 325.

I've also used the more expensive Dunlop K70 universal.... great tyres, but I found the wear rate on the rear wheel very disappointing so I've switch to the Cheng Shin tyres which have the same tread pattern, they seem to have the same characteristics but don't wear out so quick.

These modern tyres are not made the same as the old rubber tyres. I suspect they're Neoprene or something which is far more supple and to that end the old tyre pressures should be ignored. Depending on the weight being carried, I would suggest 28-30F 30-32R.

Thank you for that.

I think I'll go with the Mitus 3.50 front and rear then.

I'm large. 6ft5in. So will put in 30F 32R and see how they look.

Re: 1941 WD G3L Tyre Question

My son has these tyres on his G3l, they work well. Also not too embarrassing if you venture off the tarmac.I'm considering a pair for mine soon as my G3l will soon need some.

Re: 1941 WD G3L Tyre Question

This may seem like a dumb question... Sorry.

What size inner tube for tyre 19x3.50?

I found these which apparently suit tyre widths 3.00-3.60.

https://www.bikebiz.com.au/products/metzeler-3-00-3-60-90-90-100-90-tr4-tube

The only concern is the valve stem length. Is it long enough? It states it is TR4 which is short stem and designed for ATVs.

Any suggestions on an inner tube that suits with correct length valve stem? What brand/model are you guys using?

Also, I can find a rim band with size 19"x25mm which I assume is correct width. Couldn't seem to find any other widths in 19".

Cheers

Re: 1941 WD G3L Tyre Question

These are about an inch wide, we haven't found any wider. Much better than a sticky mess with tape.

Re: 1941 WD G3L Tyre Question

Yes, got to agree with Mark..A rim tape is the correct solution...A 1"/25mm wide rim tape will do nicely...If you've had the wheels rebuilt check that there are no spoke cut ends/sharp edges protruding from the nipples before fitting the tapes etc...Ian

Mark

Yes similar to what I have found, thanks.

Ian

Yes, good point, I will double check before putting on the tape.

Lastly, anyone able to advise on a suitable inner tube before I drop $20 on a tube that may not have the correct valve stem?

Re: 1941 WD G3L Tyre Question

Anything like these. I'm inclined to go for the heavy duty version. Ron

Just remember when using the above type tubes to tighten the nut onto the clamp washer or the neck could come out of the tube.
