M 20 Footrest

What is the best way to straighten an M 20 footrest? Should I heat it or should I do it cold? Please advise, thank you, Dave B.

I've straightened Steel forgings easily with heat. Ron

Re: M 20 Footrest

I had to straighten a couple. Heat makes to process quick and simple. I was afraid I was going to break them by pounding on them.
Red hot and the section you want bends easily.

Thank you, heat on large gas ring, big blacksmiths vice, long piece of pipe, no problem.Dave.

Re: M 20 Footrest

You just need to heat the area local to where you want to bend it, I use a welding torch with a big nozzle. Ron

Re: M 20 Footrest

I do them on the bike because that is where they need to line up
Oxy torch where the bend needs to be with a really big ring spanner over the peg to do the levering with
Although it is a forging, no need to heat it past where it will give a bit of resistance to being bent unless you fancy yourself as Mulsiver ( as seen on the BSA old factory key stone )
