Re: M20 clutch spring tool

I always leave one steel and one friction disc out of the stack. A light clutch with no slip or drag and even works without any problems on my 600cc bikes. Ron

Re: M20 clutch spring tool

An additional note
As square guage material is no longer available in the same size guage as bsa originally used - more recent offerings are round wire - which with some tools are not compatible size wise with the new round wire

If you find a spring maker who has some of the old square wire guage in stock, then get one done, failing that make up a tool for the new size round wire springs - they are operationally the same just different dimensionally
I now regret selling my nos springs - both clutch & Cush drive -

Re: M20 clutch spring tool

I suppose it is because the M20's ended up being a chair tug but I always found it confusing that the mild 13 Hp M20 got a big heavy weight clutch while the 18 to 22 Hp OHV's got the short cutch.

Re: M20 clutch spring tool

['I always leave one steel and one friction disc out of the stack..']

This leaves more space in the basket for the clutch plates to separate...It should be noted, however, that many of the currently available friction plates are thicker than the originals... When these are used and this additional thickness is factored in, even without two of the plates there is actually no difference in the overall height of the clutch plate stack and thus no gain...Original fibre plates are .093" thick...Ian

Re: M20 clutch spring tool

Never the less Ian, I just rebuilt my clutch with new steel plates from JOB and the friction discs you had made to the correct thickness. Still with two plates removed and all works beautifully over the resent 300 miles covered on sunny Sundays.:relaxed:

Re: M20 clutch spring tool

I'm not disputing that Ron...I've done it myself for decades...I'm just pointing out to anyone that doesn't know that when thicker than standard pattern plates are used the change to less plates has no effect, so the plates must be checked...Ian

Looked at doing something like that but the 3 clutch nuts I have are all different sizes ( pattern parts perhaps )
The first one I made fitted the spare clutch nut nicely but was too small to go over the one on the bike
Checked it against the spare ( B31 ) clutch and that was a different size again.

So it really needs to be a set including the spring compressor, spanner for the nut and not forgetting the nut.

Re: M20clutch spring tool

I was thinking along those lines but you run into clearance problems with the pressure plate as the tool has to go down the well in the pressure plate yo fully compress the spring .
I have not checked parts numbers yet so not sure if they are supposed to be different , or they just got smaller over time
The tool Ron made & Michael is selling would not work on my clutch as the spring would be lucky to be 1/8" bigger diameter than the nut.
However that is what was on the bike when I got it so no guarrantee that any part is original and the spare spring I got from Bill Green is a lot smaller than the one that is on there now and it does not fit inside any of the 3 nuts I have to hand .
They very well could all be slightly different sizes which is why the factory tool simply bears against the nut rather than straddle it so one size will fit all which was probably OK when the threads were in good nick 60 years ago .

Re: M20clutch spring tool

The dimensional tolerance of the clutch spring was only .015" on both the inside and outside diameters...O.D 2.317"-2.332", I.D 1.755"-1.770"...So, it seems either the spring you have been supplied with is not the correct one or the nut may be a pattern item.... There are pattern nuts out there but not flat wire springs to my knowledge...

Personally, I've used my clutch tool on a number of different machines and never come across such discrepancies...Ian

Re: M20clutch spring tool

It has to be admitted that in Australia there's a multiplicity of pattern type centre nuts, many of which are a poor fit on the central thread. I suppose some come from here, some from the UK.

Re: M20clutch spring tool

[' I suppose some come from here, some from the UK..']...There are also Indian made ones...Ian

Re: M20clutch spring tool

Yes, Ian, I hadn't thought of that. I mostly go through stuff I bought years ago so I don't know much about the Indian Made issue.

Re: M20 clutch spring tool

This seemed to work. The nut was flogged from previous installation and removal. Was hard to get off all the way, the thread on the nut was poor on inspection once removed.

Used 2 x 75mm square washers (Bunnings I/N 0044451)
M5 40mm Hex bolts and Nuts (Bunnings I/N 0247339)
5/16 BSCY Bolt 3 inches (Classic fasteners – 4 inch would be better as I had to back off the 5mm bolts to fully release the spring)
5/16 BSCY Nut (Classic fasteners)

Drilled out at 57mm using a pattern of 5mm holes then die grind to neat fit. Did taper the hole towards the front so is does not grab on the nut during removal.
Stacked plates and drilled out to take a 5mm tap. Enlarged top plate holes to accept 5mm bolt and nut.
Cost me less than $10 for the materials.

Cheers
Brian

Re: M20 clutch spring tool

Hello Gentlemen

Hope you Chaps are all very well, been away for a while from the world of WM20's, laid my WM20 up 2 years ago.. SO got round to it last week at long last. Did all the basic servicing & she fired up yesterday, timing we did today..clutch was slipping very badly which was why I think I put it to one side whilst messing about with other things that have petrol in them...

So cleaned the clutch in situ with petrol but it was pretty badly full of crud/oil. Been good for about 10 years without service.

The clutch spring tool that Michiel makes looks great (just emailed him) so hopfully he has one..
