I found 2 holes in the steering head of my BSA M20.
What could be the reason for these holes? Did they come like this from factory? https://i.ibb.co/6Fty3ZW/Lenkkopf.jpg
We stand on the shoulders of those who went before us with these bikes.
AND, we don't really "own" them. They found us! We will pass them on into
history.
Have you an illustrated parts book? A shop manual? Service sheets?
If you are like us, in the middle of the night, a question will pop
into you head. I'm the impatient sort with this, so I have to read.
These are invaluable to have to keep the few running in top condition.
They ain't making any NOS parts these days! The ones that are out there are
getting scarce. As you are finding out! All of us too by the way.
I wish you all the best in your restoration. It helps to ask the questions here
but it also helps to go look at the bikes posted, and as many pics as possible
so you can see for yourself what is what. Doing the detective work is a huge
part of it. Besides, it's fun.
My latest project is a 1920 Triumph Model H. No "Forum" with this one!
I have a spare parts list from January 1944, an instruction book for 1939 models and a maintenance manual and instruction book. That´s it.
As I disassembled the bike in 1993 in Tel Aviv, imported it to Germany in 1997 and it has now been lying around for many, many years, it will be a huge puzzle for me, from the many, mostly very worn-out and damaged parts to put them all together again.
I will definitely have a few more questions and still need a number of parts..
If you are going to use the std open ball races then get some can and block off the two large holes in the steering where the frame members are braised into the lug.
Otherwise you will be filling the top rail and front downtube with grease via those two grease nipples.
