I knew a dispatch rider by the name of Douglas Miles - he ran a motorcycle shop in Droitwich. He was with the BEF and during the retreat to Dunkirk he arrived late at a river bridge which had been blown up so he and his M.20 + some others tried to cross the river in a rubber dinghy. I think they came under fire when part way across, the bike fell over and punctured the bottom of the dinghy. Bike and dinghy went to the bottom whilst everyone else had to swim for it.
