The originals were pressed from the front using a die that has the letters cut into it with a flat ended tool ( like an end mill )
The repos are stamped in with letter punches from the back which is why the letters are round and not flat.
Done with a Dymo labeler on steroids.
I got mine from Roy a few years ago, he stamped them for me. I don't think he does anymore, but i'm sure that he will chip in.
