Air in oil return

Hi all.
I’m new to owning a WM20 so wondering if you can help a novice.
I changed the engine oil and fitted a replacement (Indian) filter the other day. When I run the engine it looks like the return is blowing air out with the oil! Anyone recognise this?
The filter was well pre-soaked in oil and the oil level in the tank sits flush with the top of the filter.
I did drain the sump and replaced the plate with a gasket sandwiching the gauze filter. It’s not leaking oil but wondered if it could be sucking air in?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Air in oil return

David the scavenge side of the pump works harder than the delivery side, which it turn means it will run low of oil in the sump to return. It's quite normal to see it splurting back rather that a steady heavy stream. Ron
