Re: Lex has the horn!

Hello Ron

The ex BEF WD/C that you rebuilt for Ben still had its original horn, unfortunately the internals had been taken out. But the Miller badge was there! :-)

Re: Lex has the horn!

Thanks to Jan for providing me with a hi res picture of probably the only one that shows the Miller badge on the Clearhoots horn. I've reduced it here for the forum.

Miller-Badge

Yes Jan. Ben supplied a perfect horn for his bike which he might have acquired from you and I bought his old one and fitted modern internals to it. It's now on my Velo MDD (below) and I have another working original on my WD/L (so far without Miller badge). Ron

Re: Lex has the horn!

This is the front of the rare Clearhooters HF320 for anyone who might want to know or has one they don't need? There was also a bigger version with 8 screws around the bezel.....But I think they were more for cars.

Not to be confused with the post war cast version HF180 which looks like an Altette and are often seen NOS in crinkle paint and guys get excited by the WD label......I think those were fitted to TRW's. Ron

On all the other early works photographs of the WD/C, the center of the horn is always hidden either behind the frame tube or the exhaust pipe… But in this picture you can clearly see the Miller badge...

Re: Lex has the horn!

Thanks guys, I have several horns!! But the HF320 is stamped HF180 on mine, so what's the difference?

Cheers,

Lex

Re: Lex has the horn!

Lex the one I have here in your box is stamped HF320. I also used to be confused over the numbers, thinking that the screw bezel type was just an earlier version of the HF 180 rolled bezel type. But I've since put this down to the back covers been swapped around.

Re: Lex has the horn!

For as far as I know, HF320 is screwed bezel, HF180 is rolled bezel...

Re: Lex has the horn!

Yep. But the different post war hooter is also HF180:persevere: Ron

Looks like a Lucas Altette!!

Re: Lex has the horn!

Isn't the post war one a HF180A...?

Re: Lex has the horn!

OK, that was a possibility that I considered, so since I really need a Miller badge?? (do I, Jan??) please don't convert that one Ron, but I will give you a rusty one, where the text is unreadable.

Cheers, Lex

I'm not convinced Lex... Since Ben's ex BEF WD/C had an original Miller, I put a Miller on my ex BEF WD/C as well... But factory photographs show that Enfields used Miller horns and ClearHooters horns through each other, looks like they took what was available. After all, these horns were exactly the same, only the badge was different (an early form of "badge engineering"). Did all BEF WD/Cs come with a Miller? I don't know...

Re: Lex has the horn!

The factory picture of a WD/L clearly shows the Miller badge. But at the moment, I've just left mine with it's nicely stamped HF 320 marking.

PS I must find out where Rik bought his "Rivet Counter" T shirt.
