Hello group I have problem with the shock absorber bsa wm20, when I tight it I cant kick the Kickstar, someone told me to make a spacer behind it, I order and wait the lock washer and the spring, how can I upload photos here?thanks
The engine shock absorber part with the splines #56 sometimes has the spacer built into it, and sometimes it's a separate spacer/collar #113. You need to make a spacer that runs on the inner track of the main bearing and so that #56 is just clear of the crankcase. Maybe someone has one at hand to measure, but you can easily work it out. It seems that you have the wrong shock absorber unit, you might have a post-war unit and these doesn't have a fixed distance piece. Don't try to start your BSA as you could damage your engine cases.
Here a photo of such a unit that is suitable for a war time BSA. The red arrow points to the distance piece.
Good picture Henk. But in the above illustration from my WW2 RAF parts list, it clearly shows the separate spacer #113. I've seen both types on WM20's and never understood when the change took place? Ron
The above would be an easy fix but there can also be a more serious problem if the 1 inch distance piece [no. 111] between both bearings is worn much, they often are and think the reason is running with the nut not tight enough.
When the nut is than being tightened again, the crankshaft will move axially and pulled up against the small ballbearing which has a fixed position in the case and the sides of the rollers of the rollerbearing can get pushed against its ridge in the outerring and lock up the crank.
