Wm20 Kickstart Quadrant , Dynamo and Magneto advice/Information

Rebuilt the gearbox but I'm having a problem with the kickstart .I fitted a new quadrant and moves nice a smoothly when not offered on the box. When the cover is put on the box the kickstart depresses but the new quadrant does not engage correctly and then jams in the down position.I've taken the cover off 3 times but cannot see any marks where it seems to be jamming  . I've tried 2 "old" quadrants that I have they work fine but unfortunately the shafts are worn so dont want to use them .

Can anyone suggest where I can either buy a NOS one or somewhere that makes quality quadrants that are reliable and work or have any idea what could be causing the problem......

The next question I've bought a Magneto (it does spark) but would like it servicing/checking out and was wondering who can do a good reliable job on it , the Dynamo I've taken off the bike is not charging so would like that rebuilding at the same time .I'm not in a rush to have them done as they will be kept as backup spares .

What sort of price is the going rate for dynamo rebuilds etc , I realise it depends on what parts are required but was wondering what a full rebuild might be .

Thanks Dave

Re: Wm20 Kickstart Quadrant , Dynamo and Magneto advice/Information

I used Paul Dunn recently (01782 854839) to overhaul the dynamo for my Gold star...A complete rebuild with everything done was about £240, though he may quote each job individually so check before sending...I was happy with the standard of workmanship in this case and I am fussy....It's the first time I've used him as the chap that has done all my mags for the last 30 years has just retired...

I used Dave Lindsley for my magneto...He's been in the game as long as I can remember. I supplied a number of NOS components for the job and stripped the mag and prepared and blasted all the castings prior to despatch...He quotes when he has inspected the mag so I had already committed to recorded delivery costs to him before getting a price...Frankly it was a bloody high price in my opinion considering what I had done beforehand and the NOS parts I sent to him with the unit..However, I swallowed it as it would have been another £15 recorded delivery cost back to me and I'd still have to find another rebuilder...

When it was ready for despatch back to me I got the sting in the tail...He's VAT registered so there went another 20% on the job and the postage....Far too expensive in my opinion and it still annoys me when I think of the total price...Needless to say that's the only time as far as he's concerned...Ian

Cannot go far wrong with Tony Cooper. sorry I can't remember the number or address, I seem to think it's Halesowen, he did my last K2F mag for my A7 in Oct 2015 and charged me £173 - 90 complete overhaul, really good service.

Kind regards TTJohn

Recommend Tony Cooper. He has done an excellent job on all of mine and my friends my mags.

Re: Wm20 Kickstart Quadrant , Dynamo and Magneto advice/Information

Down here in the South West many of us use Paul Lydford of APL Magneto's. He really knows his stuff,my G3L is running a dynamo from him, and my rigid AJS had a Lucas racing mag done by him. Very reasonable prices too,the racing mag was in poor shape when I gave it to him, came back looking a million dollars and worked a treat to.From memory i think it was approx £200 for the mag,not Vat registered. He also goes to Kempton jumble most times.

Re: Wm20 Kickstart Quadrant , Dynamo and Magneto advice/Information

Thanks Ian. While scouring the internet I came across Paul Lindsey and was actually going to give him call, but I think I'll avoid him. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be many of the old school engineers that specialise in rebuilding mag/dynos up North .

All the information is much appreciated .

Thanks John , I'll check him out also

Thanks Jon , all helpful stuff

Re: Wm20 Kickstart Quadrant , Dynamo and Magneto advice/Information

A kickstart lever that does not return is not a problem with the quadrant, unless the return spring is weak or broken.
It is a problem with the ratchet pinion not releasing and allowing the kick start to swing back.
Usually it is a problem with the gaskets.
The inner one must be a very thin paper one and the outer should also be thin ( about 2 to 3 times the thickness of the inner.
People fit thick outer gaskets to overcome a leak and when you do this the ratchet pinion gets jambed.

So if the kick start moves easily & returns well without being fitted to the box but jambs when bolted up have a close look at the ratchet.

I use Tom and Jeff Magnetos based in the North East. Father and son team. Excellent service and a good price. They do a lot for the Norton owners. Contact them on 07917274099
I have had a quick turnaround every time, bikes not missed a beat.
Also had a three brush dynamo converted to a two brush for my Sloper.
They are my go to repairers.

Re: Wm20 Kickstart Quadrant , Dynamo and Magneto advice/Information

Trevor,
a lot has been written about gaskets in the gear box.
Obviously a very delicate matter.
I used a thin gasket between the housing and middle cover, as you describe. But then when I tightenend the bolts, my gears would't turn around anymore. Fully stuck ! A little thicker gasket solved the problem.

Something else. I had a kick start quadrant and ratchet gear both NOS, but they didn't match very well so I had to use an older gear. That worked fine.

As I said, working on these boxes is very delicate

Re: Wm20 Kickstart Quadrant , Dynamo and Magneto advice/Information

Don't tell me , tell Dave,
He is the one with the stuck kick start.
The other thing that I should have mentioned but forgot , well to be truthful was not 100% sure about is fitting the rachet & ratchet pinion backwards.
I know you can do it on the unit singles with this result and fairly sure I have done the same on my M20 but not sure now.
I should have kept a diary of all the silly mistakes but after making them once you tend to forget about them.

Re: Wm20 Kickstart Quadrant , Dynamo and Magneto advice/Information

I think that the locking of the gears with a standard gasket (Les told me that they are 7 thou) is more to do with shimming the end float of the shafts correctly, although fitting an over thick gasket or 2-3 standard gaskets can have the same effect. After market gaskets can be far too thick! Ron

Re: Wm20 Kickstart Quadrant , Dynamo and Magneto advice/Information

I suppose you're right Ron.
Forgot to mention that I had some new bronze bushes fitted. It may have caused some difference.

On the other hand, I once rebuild my Triumph 5T box and Norton MK2 box, never had any difficulties.
Never mind. Lets say, it keeps us off the street.

Re: Wm20 Kickstart Quadrant , Dynamo and Magneto advice/Information

Quite so Mick. But the M20 boxes are not as easy to rebuild as some of the others. I once drove one of mine 130 miles to the other side of Dartmoor to watch it being done. There was a lot of assembling, measuring end float through the inspection hole, disassembly and making or altering thrust washers.....repeat....repeat....Definitely not the friendliest boxes I've ever worked on. Ron

Re: Wm20 Kickstart Quadrant , Dynamo and Magneto advice/Information

Not being conversant with these beasts ,I think I've bitten off more than I can chew by the sounds of it  .

Next question is .....Anyone know of a gearbox specialist that I could send it too to do the job properly for me ,I think it wise I send it to someone that knows what they are doing

Thanks

Dave
