Is it necessary to soak a new sprocket oil seal (for the 1948 gearbox) in oil. ?

Hi John
If the seal you are using is a modern rubber type replacement seal, then a small amount of oil on the lip will help position and stop premature wear.
If however a felt seal is used, then soaking in oil is not a bad idea.
If it is a leather lip seal, then it is imperative. To soften the leather.
