Could that be a lucky horse shoe on the front guard?

It sort of looks like a shackle but I can't imagine the mudguard holding up very well if the rider needed a tow.

Is the rider displaying a North Africa ribbon ? Also he's wearing a German belt and there appears to be a number painted on the blackout cover of the headlight.
