Need some wisdom please.
My M20 was built in 43 & then rebuilt at depot in 44, which Henk informs me is probably why I have a 41 front balance.
The rear balance has holes for the passenger seat and the lower stays have the studs for the panniers BUT the rear frame has no mounting lugs for foot pegs,
So would it have had on a mid 43 build (and it was swapped out in the 44 rebuild or later)
OR
Is there a clamp on alternative that I should seek out and if so what do they look like please?

According to Henk, the early ones have this bracket that is on other side of the number late and runs its whole length, as opposed to the later style of two separate posts.

Still not making a lot of sense? Maybe go back to an old fashioned computer! The early bikes did have a front number plate with the full length spot welded fixing on each side of the plate. Number plates were deleted early on and no number plates were fitted until post-war regulations ensued. Ron

Getting back to the footrests, early M20s didn't have them or the mounting lugs fitted to the frame..
'Clamp on' brackets and footrests were supplied for retro fitment to these early M20s to enable them to have pillion footrests...
A pillion seat, rear rack , pannier support tubes, bags and carriers were also part of the kit that upgraded the early bikes to the spec. of the later ones...

It would seem you have an early (39) rear frame section if you don't have the footrest lugs so you will need at least the clamp on footrests and pillion seat if you want to carry a pillion...Ian

Seems my hunch about the rear frame not being the original was correct, suspect it was also replaced in 44 rebuild.
Apologies to all for confusion, posting with this phone is a pain and evidently requires (very) thorough proof reading!

Scott my own bike is 1940 which has been brought up to the later war spec that Ian described. (It also still has the early field stand lug) These are the correct BSA add on pillion foot rests. Ron

I don't know a part number of the top of my head, and can't remember seeing them in my parts lists. The foot rests themselves are the standard part. It's just the clamps that are extra parts. I'll look later and see if they are stamped at all. I'll also look in my 39 and 40 civy lists. Ron

I can't find mention in either the 1939 or 1940 parts lists, or see a number on the obvious side. Probably just something sold as an optional extra or accessory back then. Matty's picture show them clearly, and I just took this of one of mine fitted. Ron

They seem relatively simple to make from scratch, I'm guessing 7/16 BSC bolts and stud?
What size/thickness would you say the strap is made from?
How deep is the foot on that bracket where it sits on the strap?
I have a mate who could machine the brackets easily, although now would be nice obviously!

OK here's a shot from the side. The material for the straps is 7/8" x 5.5-6mm depending where I place my vernier. The lug that holds the footrest is about 2 5/8" long......5/16" fixings. Ron
