Hi does anyone have either a diagram or picture for the correct positions for controls eg. horn, dip switch etc. for a 1940 WM20?

Re: controls

I have the early BSA levers on my M20 which provides for the horn and dip switch to piggyback on them. But here is one of my Norton's which I think is about the standard set up for all the bikes at the time. Although by the time of blackout procedures, and the WD four position light switch was fitted, I think the dip switches were mostly deleted......No point having a dipping headlamp behind a blackout mask. Re: controls

Yes Henk, the top picture is exactly what I have. I've noticed before that the RAF line drawing doesn't include the horn button....but it's obvious. Ron

Re: controls

I have this set for one of my future projects. This is for a BSA with frame number WM20 33382.

Re: controls

Very nice collection Henk, but I still don't believe that you ride with the levers in that configuration.....And the dip switch should be redundant I think? Ron

Re: controls

I just put all components on the handlebar as they are in the drawing, probably not how they will work properly.

Here a photo of a still pretty factory fresh looking BSA with tank number C4355691 and frame number WM20 39099 still with a Dipswitch fitted.

Re: controls

The DME Circulars give a clue to the removal of the dipswitch.

B80 3/12/40 Substitution of a separate horn push for combined horn push and dipper switch All M/Cs

Its listed under the heading "Immediate action" and appears to mean the removal of a perfectly serviceable component and manufacture of a considerable number of new ones for the simple purpose of standardisation in a period of great shortage, odd really?

Re: controls

I have the early levers and the horn to piggy back but the dip switch I have is the same as Ron's picture that clamps onto the bars, does anyone have the correct one for sale or know of a repo one being made?

Re: controls

Barry in that case, the switch you are looking for is a Lucas 31405. They were fitted to several makes and there used to be repros but I haven't looked lately. Try a google search and ebay. Ron

Re: controls

PS they still seem to be out there:-

Maybe still worth further search though. From memory, the screws are 5BA. Ron

Re: controls

Dip Switch question-

This is what's on my bike. Clearly a makeshift attachment. And I've found what it should look like (that's a horn dip switch combo but same style). I can put together the little bolts and nuts and cut a rubber mat. My question is exactly how is it attached to the handle bar? I'm flummoxed and here's the place to go when one is flummoxed.

Re: controls

That dip switch and it's opposite horn push were only designed to be screwed to the back of the levers that were made especially to take them.

Re: controls

So the original was replaced by this jury rig at some point. That makes sense. Thanks. Now to decide if that's going to part of the story or replace it.

Re: controls

There is information within this thread that will help to decide if your bike actually had a dip switch fitted. But if you really want to fit one, then the clamp on type as in Henk's post is the best option. I think there are repros available and I can look up the Lucas number if required. Ron
