Exhaust lifter adjustment

Greetings! I'm a new M20 owner and this site/forum has been great as I go about learning about this bike. I have a question about adjusting the exhaust lifter. I had trouble tightening down the cable arm, as it would spin the entire assembly before I could get it tight. I resorted to screwing the lifter partially into the engine and putting a wrench handle between the lifter and case to keep it from spinning as I tightened the nut to secure the cable arm. Hopefully that made sense. Is their a proper way to do this? Thanks!!

Re: Exhaust lifter adjustment

Hello Aaron,

There is a special set of thin spanners for use when adjusting the valve clearance,
But you can get by with a 1/4"W spanner for the nut, and a small spanner
To hold the tappet stem from rotating while adjusting.

You can find very good info at the service manual.

Re: Exhaust lifter adjustment

Hi Aaron,

Not sure if there is a proper way but the way you described (prevent the lever rotating) is probably the way most people tighten down that nut.

Re: Exhaust lifter adjustment

It's a long time since I've had mine apart. But I've a feeling that the peg and lever have fine splines Ron

Thanks for the quick replies and info/links! Very helpful and much appreciated.

Re: Exhaust lifter adjustment

Hello Aaron.

I realise now that my answer was completely off.
And you meant to ask about the lifter only...

It was late at night, I read fast, and guess I did not pay full attention...

So this is the way I do it:

After screwing in the threaded body of the lifter into the tappet box
With the lifter spindle already inside it,
And positioning the peg at the correct place,
I insert the spring, positioning the lifter arm,
(As Ron mentioned, the peg and lever have fine splines) and start fastening the nut.
At that stage I just hold the lever, as the splines are already engaged,
And continue fastening the nut...

No worries! My explanation wasn't exactly the best .

I'll pull the assembly out to check but I suspect the reason for my trouble is that the splines are worn to the point the lever arm is allowed to spin freely on the shaft. I was able to tighten the arm such that it can lift the valve without rotating, but I'm hesitant in putting faith in it staying that way.

If I need a replacement lifter arm assembly, where should I look to source one?

Thanks!!

Never mind. Snagged a NOS spindle on eBay.
