More about speedos

I have read on the website that a cheap Indian made speedo may do as a stop gap. I currently have an original item which will need specialist attention, no doubt at considerable cost. I would be willing to chance an Indian made unit for a while but what about the gearbox? Will this need changing too? Is the drive rotation the same on these reproduction items and what about compatibility of the drive shaft? Of course I can easily reduce the size of the square section shaft but what about the threads on the cable mountings? I will be at Newark in 2 weeks - do you think there might be anybody with these for sale, so that I could examine one? I see that they can be bought in bulk from India for resale here. Thanks. Mike

Re: More about speedos

Hi Mike, Don't waste your time & money on anything from India' I have just had a quote from Russell at WWW.Chronometrics.co.uk (Nottingham) For a full concourse restoration on a Smiths M20 speedo at £125 with no vat and a 12 month guarantee, He used to have a stall at Newark ages ago, but there are a couple of guys there who sell chronometric body's bezels and glass's as for speedo drives all the ones I pick up are all anticlockwise, hope this helps Regards, John(Tom)Green.

Re: More about speedos

I bought one of those about 12 months ago and it seems to work fine (about 10% optimistic with low-profile tire). Its a straight fit for the cable but a new mounting plate will need to be made-up because the repop has the cable entering in the center, not off-set.

Re: More about speedos

That's very encouraging John. I think I will contact them tomorrow and see what they say. I would much rather keep the original if possible. Having now managed to open it without breaking the glass or damaging the bezel I can see that one wheel is partially stripped but everything does actually move and most of the mechanism seems to be in reasonable condition. May not be the mountain of cost I was expecting after all. Thanks for your reply. Mike

Re: More about speedos

Based on your recommendation I contacted Russell today and have arranged to drop the offending speedo off. Prices seem really keen and I was very impressed when I spoke to him on the phone. I will post the results once the work is done. Mike.
