Gearbox oil leak

My m20 had been sitting for some news when i bought it.On checking the gearbox oil level it was dry so i filled it and oil is leaking from the chain drive sprocket. Can this be fixed and how big of a problem is it.

Re: Gearbox oil leak

Hello Mark,

There's a fairly lengthy discussion of this topic in the threads if you use the search function.

The oil tightness of the gear box isn't of the finest at the sprocket. One reason is because the main shaft at the sprocket end had an open bearing. You can now buy sealed bearings. Another reason is because of the "seal" to the clutch which was a cork washer. This dries out, breaks etc etc. Added to this many people overfill the gearbox and leave the bike tilted on the side stand, which makes the oil run out. This means that many folks think they have a major oil leak when they are simply up against the limitations of the bike.

The oil can be sealed in if you want to fit a modern oil seal.

Best wishes,

Allan

Hello Mark,

This might help:

I bought this off SRM thinking it would help,
But somehow the thread did not fit the WD gear.
