I think that you're right Steve. The marking is on a square background which makes it likely to be a formation sign. 5th Indian were quite widely travelled. I don't know where the location is.

The Norton has no crankcase shield so is not an India Office machine. It appears to have no conventional toolbox (the pannier boxes would be hidden from this angle) so it is probably a late 1940 / early 1941 machine, of which many were sent to the Middle East and where battledress was certainly worn in some areas.
