Welbike Engine number query

Hi

Found the following MK1 Welbike for sale , I'm curious about the engine number , did these differ on Welbikes early day's ? I've seen the following prefixes on Welbikes XXA which I believe was fitted to the early Autocycles , XXE obviously Welbike orientated ,and now XXF .

Could all these prefixes at some point have all been used on the Welbike .

Here's the link to the XXF listed Welbike ..... http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C849852

Re: Welbike Engine number query

Hi Dave

I don't actually know the answer but if XXA is Autocycle and XXE is Excelsior then perhaps XXF could be Francis Barnett?

My Mk1 Welbike just has XX with no third letter, but I'm pretty sure it didn't start life with this engine.

Lex may be able to tell you more.

Re: Welbike Engine number query

According to the research and books written by Orchard & Madden, Peter Miller and Rob Van Meel, all Welbike engines are prefixed XXE. Ron

Re: Welbike Engine number query

Thanks Rob , I was curious with XXF, first time I've seen this prefix .I forgot to mention I have also seen a Welbike with SER prefix possibly post war ? and blank no prefix or number .

I would imagine a few out there have had engines or cases replaced due to damage at some point .
