Hi All, picked up most of a Triumph 3S engine off ebay the other day. It's got a WD arrow on the number as well, which goes: 40(then the arrow, over a very lightly stamped M over a small size 68) then 3S then 28163. Anyone any idea of the date? Presumably it's a 3SW. I'm now on the lookout for a frame!
40 is the year code and '68' is the Ministry of Supply inspector who was at the Coventry factory at that time. At some point the RASC ceased stamping the census numbers...Mid 1940 I think but all the Triumph records were destroyed when the factory was hit during the Coventry blitz.
I would say a pukka mid-1940 3SW. Jan has collected some data on the RASC habit of stamping census number on crankcases. I have a feeling that it stopped around May / June - more or less the same time as the fall of France
Thanks Rik. I've now found a barrel (ebay again, well cheap, slight repairable fin damage)), so I'm going to get on with the engine rebuild. it's nearly all there, but as I don't have a frame (yet), I can look out for any missing parts as time goes on. Got a feeling a frame is going to be hard to come by, as will correct forks etc. At any one time, I have 2 or 3 projects on the go, like my own M20 (nothing special, but bits are coming my way slowly).
