Re: M20 Dynamo supplies 6 volts

Did you measure the dynamo outfit directly or after regulation ? If that is all it's giving with 'D' and 'F' bridged and connected to ground then there is something wrong with the output.

What type of regulator are you using ? Does the battery now hold charge ?

Isn't a 15 amp fuse about right ?

Re: M20 Dynamo supplies 6 volts

Hi Rik,
Thank you.
I installed a modern digital replacement from www.powerdynamo.biz, which I have very very good experience with (on my BMW R51/3).
I am checking on the battery's terminals while installed on the machine, engine running. As mentioned, first I had there good results.
I got a feeling that the fuse has nothing to do with it, but then again - not sure.
What can be done next?
How should I check the dynamo itself?
Is it needed or is my method (on batt. terminals) good enough?
Forgot to mention that the checking took place while all lights are on (engine on).
Thanks!

Re: M20 Dynamo supplies 6 volts

Checking across the battery shows that something is not up to scratch but doesn't show where.

This website is quite handy on dynamo electrics :-

It's a simple test and will let you know if the unregulated dynamo output is OK. If it is then you've got to look further.

There is a fair chance that you've simply got a battery that has become defective.

Re: M20 Dynamo supplies 6 volts

Put two wires into the dynamo after removing the standard connections...

Next join the ends of those wires together...If your system is negative earth, connect the joined wires to the positive side of a voltage tester set to record DC voltage...

Put the negative side of the tester to earth on the dynamo body...

Start the engine and slowly increase the revs..You should see 10-13 volts with a good dynamo (unregulated)....

If your system is positive earth reverse the connections to the volt tester from those described at the outset...Ian

Thanks a lot Rik and Ian.
Will do and see what's up.
Cheers.

There should be around 8V when you do the check on the battery.
