Petrol Cap Hinge

Question for the gurus of the forum. I have noticed that the hinge on the petrol cap does not seen to have a standard position. Should it be towards the front or the rear of the tank. I'm guessing that this is a model change, but does anyone know when it changed or maybe it's just another one of those variations between factories?

Re: Petrol Cap Hinge

Are you talking about M20's??

For Nortons, they changed the hinge to the side for the Vokes filter, maybe same for M20's?

Cheers,

Lex

Re: Petrol Cap Hinge

What make of bike? M20? I've seen a couple of different styles of hinged M20 petrol cap, but never a different hinge position. But like Lex, have seen it on Norton's Ron

Re: Petrol Cap Hinge

For M20/21s AA tanks have the hinge on the side rather than 'fore and aft'...One difference is they have the smaller cap (oil tank size)...

In other respects they are the same as the non cut off WD tank so have twin taps and no 'joining pipe' underneath at the front...Ian

Re: Petrol Cap Hinge

My apologies, yes I meant the fuel cap on an M20. I have a 1942 with the balloon tank which is hinged from the front. I recently acquired another tank, which I believe is the standard M20 tank (without the cut-out) which is hinged from the rear. Looking through various photos both on this site and on the net, there seems to be a variation on whether the hinge is on the front or the back of the cap, but no indication of a reason why.

Hope this explains my query better

Cheers
