Re: Specification change tmings

A Norton owner's superficial view...

The changes occurred over time and almost certainly mid-contract.

Valanced rear guards up to WM20 25000. Definitely gone by C7287

Small fuel tank definitely replaced by WM20 33382

8" headlamp seems to have continued through C11101 so maybe WM20 60000 or so

If you have a particular frame number in mind, Henk and I (and probably some others) could try to bracket it with photos and pin down spec.

Re: Specification change tmings

Hi Tik

Another project just landed in my lap

The frame no is WM20 4547- leaving the factory in october 1941

Factors i would like to know about would be

Tank type
Headlight size
Handlebar control
Footrests
Rear mudguard - currently valenced type
Forks - solid or rubber mount type - currently solid

Any guidance would be appreciated

Many thanks

Re: Specification change tmings

Rikki-Tikki to you Sir !

I can't see this frame in the ledgers but in the engine book, it appears to have been an Irish conttact bike - despatched to Ministry of Defence, Dublin.

Which basically means that I don't have a clue. If it had been British War Office, I could have arrived at some conclusions from the serial number but an Irish bike despatched miles out of sequence, who knows ? Were they built and stored, built up from old parts or built to latest pattern ? I just don't know.

Are you able to find the Dublin registration for it ? Comparing Irish photos is going to be the only way forward here.

Re: Specification change tmings

Sir Rik

Thank you

This was a later batch, i have the registration number & will post it later

These bikes, ihave seen a few can be a mixture of outgoing older parts & incoming mod spec parts

I have some bikes with big tanks lights & combo levers & steel footpegs along with std forks - rubber damping long gone

You also that the frame no sequence seems to belong in 1940 not 1941

Its like the 1940 run was halted, put aside & rerun a year later

I could find no reference to these bikes anywhere in the military archives - only in the public records where registration details were kept

Very odd
