This is a novel approach for map reading.

An early form of sat-nav. I have seen them on bikes as late as the 90's, not sure who sold them though. I don't think these were WD issue, possibly a personal piece of equipment.

A smaller version used to be sold by Old Bike Mart back inte 1980s, I still have mine.

There are some map related accessories mentioned in the wartime VAOS Chilwell master spares lists but no pictures unfortunately.

Rather like the infamous fire extinguisher there seems to be very little photographic evidence (this is the only one I've seen). The map cases mentioned in the list could be the same as the ones carried slung over the shoulder or strapped to the tank with the see through window to read the map without removing it. I would love to see any other pictures of this device on a military motorcycle if anybody has one......
