Re: Kicking off the season

This'll be a first for me Tim's WLC is really low on compression on the rear cylinder and is smoking heavily. I think a complete inspection and overhaul of the top end is required before Normandy. Ron

Re: Kicking off the season

It looks like a good time was had by all...and the weather wasn't too bad for early April either....

I suppose it'll be an exhaust valve/guide/seat and or broken ring/worn bore etc. on the Harley...just a question of which...

Hopefully it'll be easier to work on than the Indian...

Here's how I spent my weekend...Building a standard engine for my B33 as I want to take out the 720cc motor to do some further work on it...

I spent most of the day on Saturday getting the crank to run true after fitting a new big end... ...Never mind, the rest is straight forward enough!...Ian

Re: Kicking off the season

It was really nice to see Ron and his convoy of bikes on Saturday. I had been in my pit working on the rear lights of my jeep and descided to have a rest sitting on my folding chair in the sunshine with the terrier on my lap when the sound of "rolling thunder" approached and on looking up there was a load of m/c helmets looking down on me. In they came and and had a good look at the jeep and bikes, a great crowd and a very happy time was had by all. I was a bit dubious to let Ron into my playroom to look at the fleas and james ml but he seemed to like my restorations. Thank you all for a very interesting chat, John.

Re: Kicking off the season

Thanks for the great welcome John and the look see around. Love the little dogs! and the Fleas and ML are easily worth £500 each if you ever want to sell them to me

Re: Kicking off the season

It was a great weekend and thanks John for the look around and sloe gin
I've just watched Broadchurch and recognised lots of place we saw. I now know that Helmet City bike accessory shop, is the police station in the show
Sorry I was on the wrong colour Norton but the extra power was much needed going up those hills 2 up. The 100mile blast up the M5 wasn't quite as enjoyable

Re: Kicking off the season

Ian,
you should have had a job at the BSA factory

Re: Kicking off the season

Nothing as 'Spick and Span' with Tim's scruffy Harley. I found that the piston rings have lost all their spring with loads of blow by to the piston sides. The rear cylinder exhaust valve is leaking profusely. Possibly carbon build up stopping the valve shutting properly, (next on the agenda for investigation). The bores are 40 thou O/S and measure up with just 4.5 - 5 thou skirt clearance, so I think a pair of new pistons and a glaze bust will do the trick.

I had no choice but to cut the rear cylinder exhaust pipe to get the system separated. I marked it first and tacked it back in the correct location before taking it to be professionally TIG welded. I've cleaned up the whole rusty system and re-painted it with VHT black....Which I doubt Tim will thank me for as it will now detract from it's war weary "PATINA"......Shame Ron

Re: Kicking off the season

Those engines look fantastic Ian

Well done Ron, they would be lost without you, ride 'em into the ground and drop them off to you to fix

Tell Tim to take the WLA to War & Peace this year. The venue returns to the Hop Farm and there is nothing like Beltring mud/dust for re-creating war weary patina!

Re: Kicking off the season

That's where he bought the bike Ferg, the year before last. From a well known Dutch HD dealer. Ron
