Magdyno base shims?

In the process of fitting magdyno. The previous owner did not shim the magdyno out enough and the drive side magdyno bearing took a beating from too little clearance. It had .015" of shims when I removed it. The base of magdyno and engine platform are not worn at all do to very little mileage since bike was new. Adding another .010" of shims was better but still a bit too tight. Adding another .005" and all seems OK with a small amount of gear backlash so now at .030" shims total. Is this considered excessive or normal to need .030" of shimming?

Now another issue, it appears I have no hope of the oil seal working as the mag shaft is now not even close to being concentric with the seal hole now?

Re: Magdyno base shims?

Hi Bruce

What are you basing the backlash measurement on ?

As a guide for mine, I base it on the backlash between the idle gear & cam etc - have you tried this ?

Timing gear should not be in place when checking

If it's similar - it's good enough for me

The only reason I came across a seal misalignment before or difficult to align - is because the casing where the seal fits on mine is worn

If yours is a low mileage bike this shouldn't be a problem

Best regards
